18 November 2008: A World Meteorological Organization (WMO) partner, the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), has launched a Web portal, known as Product Navigator, which provides a central point for online access to all its weather and climate data and dissemination services, as well as data from some other agencies.
20 November 2008: The World Bank-led Global Gas Flaring
Reduction partnership (GGFR) will organize a forum to look for ways of
unlocking the value of wasted gas associated with oil production.
20 November 2008: A press conference on issues relating to
gender and climate change was held on 20 November 2008, at UN Headquarters, New
York, US, to recap a two-day meeting organized by the Global Gender and Climate
Alliance (GGCA) on how women could receive financial support for their
activities to mitigate or adapt to climate change.
18 November 2008: During his first visit to the World
Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
reaffirmed WIPO's unique role within the UN system in promoting intellectual
property, innovations and investment in new technology, which are crucial to
stimulate economic development and to tackle the current financial, climate,
food and oil crisis.
November 2008: The Second Conference on Adaptation to
Climate Change in Developing Countries will convene on 25 November 2008, in The
Hague, the Netherlands. Plenary speakers will include representatives from the
World Bank and the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as decision makers
from the EU and developing countries.
November 2008: The Second Session of the UN Economic
Commission for Europe (UNECE) Ad Hoc Group of Experts on Cleaner Electricity
Production from Coal and Other Fossil Fuels will be held on 17-18 November
2008, in Geneva, Switzerland. The meeting is taking place in the framework of
the growing world demand for electricity and the push for more environmentally
sustainable power generation, which are projected to require massive
investments in the coming years.
7 November 2008: At the 44th session of the International
Tropical Timber Council and the Associated Sessions of the four Committees
(Finance and Administration, Economic Information and Market Intelligence,
Forest Industry, and Reforestation and Forest Management), the European
Commission (EC) announced a communication on deforestation and climate change,
with the goal of informing the EU position at the upcoming climate change
negotiations in Poznan, Poland.
27 October 2008: The European Council has adopted a
directive (document 3657/08) that includes aviation activities in the EU
greenhouse gas emission trading scheme (ETS).
25 October 2008: Over 50 countries met in Madrid, Spain, from 23-24 October 2008 for the final preparatory conference for the establishment of an International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
3 November 2008: The UN Environment Programme, (UNEP), with
the EU Member States Defense Environment Network, the US Department of Defense,
the Institute for Environmental Security, the US Environmental Protection
Agency, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Institute
for Defense Analysis, and the Environment and Security Initiative, is
co-sponsoring a meeting from 3-5 November 2008 in Paris, France, on “The
Importance of Military Organizations in Protecting the Climate: 2008.”
