Ozone Day Celebrates '30 Years of Healing Ozone Together' [viewed]

ozone_together16 September 2015: The UN system celebrated the International Ozone Day under the theme '30 Years of Healing Ozone Together,' celebrating the 1985 signing of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. The Vienna Convention is the framework agreement under which the 1987 Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was adopted.

UNFCCC Reports on Gender-Responsive Climate Policy Workshop [viewed]

UNFCCC11 September 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a report (FCCC/SBI/2015/12) for the workshop on gender-responsive climate policy, which was held during the Bonn Climate Change Conference in June 2015. The workshop examined how gender considerations are integrated into UNFCCC processes, especially with regard to mitigation action, and technology development and transfer.

Event: 26th Annual SPREP Meeting [viewed]

The 26th annual meeting of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) will begin, on 21 September, with the 5th Pacific Environment Forum (PEF), which will focus on opportunities and challenges in climate change finance, particularly how members and SPREP could work together to improve access to the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the Adaptation Fund (AF) and other funds. It will be followed, on 22-24 September, by the 26th SPREP Meeting of Officials, which will review progress over the past year, and discuss institutional reform, the 2016 work programme and budget, the Pacific Climate Change Centre (PCCC), climate finance, a new 2016-2025 regional strategy on waste and pollution management, the role SPREP in implementation of the SAMOA Pathway and the Sustainable Development Goals, the development of the next SPREP Strategic Plan. The Meeting is also expected to announce the new SPREP Director-General.

Event: Coherent Policies for Sustainable and Low-Carbon Societies [viewed]

This event will focus on how to enhance policy coherence to build synergies and manage trade-offs among sectors, with the broader aim of promoting a low-carbon transition and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The event will consider climate and development policy domains as well as emphasizing the importance of addressing misalignment among overall policy frameworks, sustainable development and climate goals. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Government of the Republic of Korea are organizing the event. OCED Secretary-General Angel Gurría will provide opening remarks, and Korea's Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Oh Kyung-Tae, will give an introductory address on climate change.

The Climate Group is organizing Climate Week in New York City, US, to highlight the transformational actions and commitments that innovative leaders from sub-national governments and business are taking to tackle climate change. The week-long series will include over 70 events intended to drive climate action. LAC Carbon Forum Calls for Including Market Approaches in Paris Agreement [viewed]

Latinamericanforum11 September 2015: The 9th Latin American and Caribbean Carbon Forum (LACCF 2015) concluded with calls for the use of market-based mechanisms and other forms of carbon pricing and climate finance to be included as mitigation and development tools in the global climate agreement expected to be adopted at the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Pacific Leaders Adopt Declaration on Climate Change Action [viewed]

PIF11 September 2015: Leaders at the 46th Pacific Island Forum have issued a Declaration on Climate Change Action, laying out 13 points that Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs) call for as part of the outcome of the Paris Climate Change Conference in December 2015. The Declaration also underscores the growing threat posed by climate change to PICTs, and the difficulty the region faces in adapting.

Pacific Islands Development Forum Adopts Suva Declaration on Climate Change [viewed]

pidf4 September 2015: Leaders of the Pacific Islands Development Forum, emphasizing their "grave distress" over climate change, are calling for increased support for adaptation measures and the creation of a Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS) regional task force on climate financing. The leaders called for these and other actions in the 'Suva Declaration on Climate Change,' adopted at the Third Pacific Islands Development Forum Summit of Leaders (PIDF 3).

Fatih Birol Assumes IEA Leadership, Visits China [viewed]

IEA1 September 2015: Fatih Birol has begun his term as the new Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA). Birol, a Turkish citizen, succeeds former Dutch economy minister Maria van der Hoeven as the Agency's head. Birol joined the Agency in 1995, where he has acted as Chief Economist and Director of Global Energy Economics. Prior to joining the IEA, Birol served in the Secretariat of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
