28 April 2009: In a message delivered by Miroslav Jenca, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed the summit of member States of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, which took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on 28 April 2009. Noting that the Aral Sea has shrunk by 70% in recent decades, he stated that climate variability poses a further challenge in this region where water resources are particularly vulnerable.
24 April 2009: In the framework of the G8 Italian Presidency, the G8 Environment Ministerial Meeting convened on 22-24 April 2009, in Siracusa, Italy. The meeting was attended by the G8 Environment Ministers and the European Commission, as well as Environment Ministers and senior officials from Brazil, China, India, Mexico, South Africa, Australia, Egypt, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, the Czech Republic on behalf of the European Union (EU), Sweden as the next President of the EU, and Denmark as host of the December 2009 Copenhagen Climate Change Conference.
April 2009: The Commonwealth Health Ministers meeting will convene on 17 May 2009, under the theme of “Health and Climate Change.” The meeting will provide an opportunity to bring Commonwealth Health Ministers and senior officials together to explore the risks to human health posed by climate change in the Commonwealth, and the effective policy responses for managing these risks.
24 April 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released the report of the individual review of the greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory submissions of Spain submitted in 2007 and 2008 (FCCC/ARR/2008/ESP). The expert review team (ERT) finds the inventory to be generally in line with the Revised 1996 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines, the IPCC good practice guidance and the IPCC good practice guidance for land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF).
22 April 2009: While attending the Group of Eight industrialized countries (G8) environment ministers meeting, which is taking place from 22-23 April 2009, in Siracusa, Italy, International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka presented a paper titled “Ensuring Green Growth in a Time of Economic Crisis: The Role of Energy Technology.”
21 April 2009: During the annual meeting of COGEN Europe (the European Association for the Promotion of Cogeneration), which is taking place in Brussels, Belgium, from 21-22 April 2009, Tom Kerr, International Energy Agency (IEA) Senior Energy Analyst, launched a new IEA report titled “Cogeneration and District Energy: Sustainable Energy Technologies for Today…and Tomorrow.” The report highlights that cogeneration and district energy – technologies that are widely available and cost‐effective – can largely contribute to global energy security and climate change mitigation.
16 April 2009: A symposium on the development of the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) was held from 15-16 April 2009, at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The event focused on findings and accomplishments of the EU Cooperation in Scientific and Technical Research (COST) Action 730 on UTCI.
15 April 2009: Addressing the “High-Level Meeting on the UN and the EU: Building an Effective Multilateralism,” which took place on 14 April 2009, in Barcelona, Spain, UN Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro underlined that the economic, food and energy crises, as well as climate change, are exacerbating the problems faced by developing countries.
April 2009: The World Bank, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), UN-HABITAT, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and other donors are supporting the organization of the fifth Urban Research Symposium, which will be held from 28 June-1 July 2009, in Marseille, France, under the theme “Cities and Climate Change: Responding to the Urgent Agenda.”
