September 2015 Climate2 October 2015: During the month of September, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the World Bank, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) reported on new funding, and project news and other climate finance-related developments. Multilateral development banks, climate funds, and others released studies, briefs and reports, including on carbon pricing and climate resilience, and reported on events on climate finance readiness and disaster risk financing.

Event: Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2015 [viewed]

The 2015 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) will take place in Malta, under the theme ‘Adding Global Value,' to discuss using the Commonwealth's strengths in international politics to influence and effect change on critical global issues. The meeting will take place in various historical venues around the country, while the Heads of Government retreat will be held at Fort St. Angelo. The CHOGM will hear views of the people of the Commonwealth through youth, women, business and civil society forums. The CHOGM is held every two years and is the Commonwealth's highest consultative and policy-making body.

New Permanent Observer Highlights Pacific Issues [viewed]

SPC logo27 September 2015: The Pacific Community, which became a Permanent Observer to the UN in December 2014, enabling it to participate in UN debates, made its first statement at the UN Sustainable Development Summit. Pacific Community Director-General Colin Tukuitonga highlighted climate change, youth, oceans and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as particularly concerning to the Pacific region. He also noted that education is a fundamental building block for sustainable development.

CAFI aims to reduce deforestation and forest degradation in Central Africa through mitigating climate change, reducing poverty and contributing to sustainable development.

SPREP, Coral Triangle Initiative-CFF Cooperate on Marine Conservation [viewed]

sprep-cticff22 September 2015: The Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) at the 26th Annual SPREP Meeting, which is convening in Apia, Samoa. The CTI-CFF and SPREP will collaborate on a regional community-based turtle conservation project.

EEA Assesses Role of Green Infrastructure in Mitigating Natural Hazards [viewed]

EEA21 September 2015: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has published a report highlighting the potential of green infrastructure in mitigating the impacts of weather- and climate change-related natural hazards. The report, titled 'Exploring Nature-Based Solutions: The Role of Green Infrastructure in Mitigating the Impacts of Weather- and Climate Change-Related Natural Hazards,' notes the definition of “green infrastructure” as “a strategically planned network of high-quality green spaces.”

OECD: Government Support to Fossil Fuels Hampers Climate Change Efforts [viewed]

OECD_NEW21 September 2015: The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has released its Inventory of Support Measures for Fossil Fuels 2015. According to the findings, governments of OECD countries and key emerging economies are spending US$160-200 billion annually to support the consumption and production of fossil fuels.

EU, Republic of Korea Discuss Climate, Sustainable Development, Energy [viewed]

eu_rok15 September 2015: The anticipated global climate agreement to be adopted in December 2015, energy efficiency and biodiversity conservation were among the topics addressed at the Eighth Bilateral Summit of the Republic of Korea and the EU. The two parties delivered a joint statement underlining their commitment to work with other countries to deliver an “ambitious” and “effective” agreement under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at the Paris Climate Change Conference.
