7 October 2009: The European Commission has published a proposal on “Investing in the development of low-carbon energy technologies,” calling on public authorities, business and researchers to develop by 2020 the necessary technologies to address climate change, secure EU energy supply and ensure economic competitiveness.
6 October 2009: At the behest of climate negotiators and policy makers involved in the UNFCCC negotiations leading up to the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference in December 2009, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has published an excerpt from its annual World Energy Outlook (WEO) in advance this year, to ensure that negotiators are equipped with up-to-date knowledge about the global energy sector.
6 October 2009: Leaders of the European Union (EU) and Brazil agreed to step up efforts towards the inclusion of reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) in the outcome to be reached in Copenhagen and to establish an “effective and reliable means of support for REDD” under the climate change Convention.
15 September 2009: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published a document entitled “Sectoral Approaches in Electricity: Building Bridges to a Safe Climate,” which elaborates how the international climate regime can support a transition towards a global low-carbon electricity system sectorally.
1 October 2009: Speaking at Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed that “if ever there were a time to act in a spirit of renewed multilateralism ... it is now.”

28 September 2009: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released a report reviewing Spain's current energy policies.
29 September 2009: Addressing a press conference at UN Headquarters in New York, US, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was optimistic about the UN's central role on major issues including the climate change negotiations, nuclear disarmament and the financial crisis.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) will convene a ministerial-level meeting to discuss global energy and environmental challenges. Discussions will focus on: ensuring secure and sustainable energy supplies in the aftermath of the economic crisis; necessary steps required to meet tough climate change targets; and addressing the aforementioned challenges at the global level. Additional talks will be held on improving global energy dialogue, ensuring comprehensive energy security and actions for assuring the sustainability of energy supplies in the future. The event will also include a presentation highlighting important features of the World Energy Outlook 2009 to be released ahead of schedule in November 2009, to give decision makers and negotiators the most up-to-date information available in the run-up to Copenhagen.
The latest meeting of the Major Economies Forum (MEF) on Energy and Climate convened from 17-18 September 2009 in Washington D.C. The meeting took place at the level of leaders' representatives.
