Event: IEA Workshop on Energy Storage: Issues and Opportunities [viewed]

This workshop is part of a series investigating strategic and crosscutting energy technology and policy issues identified by the IEA Committee on Energy Research and Technology (CERT). The aim of the workshop is to share research experiences, best practices, and policy in the field of energy storage. Event: IEA Fuel Poverty Workshop: Evaluating the Co-Benefits of Low-Income Weatherisation Programmes [viewed]

This workshop, hosted by Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland (SEAI), will be the first of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Energy Efficiency Unit's (EEU) new programmes of work on innovative energy efficiency policies for mitigating fuel poverty, aiming to overcome the problem of return on investments in weatherization by the poor. The workshop will address three categories of non-energy co-benefits (NEBs) for low-income energy efficiency programmes: utility/rate-payer benefits; societal economic benefits; and participant household benefits. In addition, discussions on methodologies for collecting, quantifying and evaluating NEBs are planned.

World Future Energy Summit 2011 Discusses Business, Technology and Finance [viewed]

20 January 2011: World Future Energy Summit (WFES) 2011, which convened from 17-20 January 2011, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), was organized around a high-level segment that focused on policy and strategy, and three forums on business, technology and finance. Participants considered issues such as international future energy policy, financing future energy, solar energy, green cities, sustainable buildings, wind energy, biofuels, e-mobility, energy storage, hydrogen, carbon capture and storage (CCS), energy efficiency, smart grids, and nuclear energy.

17 January 2011: The fourth World Future Energy Summit (WFES) 2011 opened in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), on 17 January 2011. The first day of this four-day event was organized around the theme “Policy and Strategy Forum,” and comprised opening statements from HE Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, CEO Masdar, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Heads of State and other dignitaries, followed by special addresses and ministerial panels.

EEA Publishes Report on Natural Hazards and Technological Accidents in Europe [viewed]

12 January 2011: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released a report titled "Mapping the impacts of natural hazards and technological accidents in Europe," which analyzes impacts of three types of hazards: hydrometeorological or weather related, such as storms, extreme temperature events, forest fires, droughts and floods; geophysical, including snow avalanches, landslides, earthquakes and volcanoes; and technological, such as oil spills, industrial accidents and toxic spills from mining activities.
