SBI, SBSTA and ADP Conclude in Paris, Drafts Forwarded to COP [viewed]

cop215 December 2015: On 4 December, the SBI and SBSTA concluded their work, but three items remained unresolved: the 2013-2015 review; capacity building under the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol; and impact of the implementation of response measures. On 5 December 2015, the ADP closed its work, adopted its conclusions, and forwarded the draft agreement and draft decision to the COP.

November 2015 Sustainable Energy Finance Update [viewed]

November 2015 Sustainable Energy1 December 2015: During the month of November, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), among others, announced sustainable energy project funding and initiatives. AfDB, IDB and Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) released reports on financing and deploying clean energy. A number of related events took place throughout the month.

Policy Update #24: INDCs: Foundation for a Successful Outcome in Paris? [viewed]

With the Paris Climate Change Conference just around the corner, 134 intended national determined contributions (INDCs), representing more than 150 countries, have been submitted to the UNFCCC Secretariat as of 12 November, and more are still expected before Paris. INDCs outline the climate actions that individual countries intend to undertake in the post-2020 period, under the new climate agreement to be decided on in Paris.[1] Viewing them in aggregate should enable the tracking of progress and determining whether they represent a collective level of ambition that will be sufficient to limit temperature rise below 2°C relative to pre-industrial levels.[2]

Event: Climate Change, Security and Defence [viewed]

This event will bring together leading global defence and security experts for a discussion 'Climate Change, Security and Defence,' as they explore the impact climate change is already having and will likely have on the future in regions—from the Arctic to sub-Saharan Africa and from the Middle East to South-East Asia. The event is hosted by the Conference Board of Canada. It brings together representatives from Norway, France, the European Union and Canada to stimulate a public debate about Canada's role in this international concern.

EU Launches GCCA+ [viewed]

gcca29 October 2015: The next phase of the Global Climate Change Alliance (GCCA) has been launched by the EU to provide approximately €350 million in the period up to 2020 to support developing countries' fight against climate change. In this phase, known as GCCA+, will focus on the most vulnerable countries and use the EU funds to leverage additional investments from private and public sources.

Workshop Stresses EbA as Basis for Climate Change Adaptation [viewed]

CBD21 October 2015: Governments should examine ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction (DRR) to provide safety nets for communities, according to the messages of a technical workshop held in Johannesburg, South Africa. The workshop messages were delivered at a side event to the 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

INDC Forum Calls for Continued Strengthened Climate Ambition [viewed]

INDC Forum Rabat 201513 October 2015: Participants at the INDC International Forum discussed the overall effect of countries' contributions to the new international climate agreement that is expected to be adopted at the Paris Climate Change Conference in November-December 2015. They concluded that, although the intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) submitted by countries so far demonstrate their commitment to mitigate climate change, there is a need to continue to revisit and strengthen the global mitigation ambition.
