EU Council Adopts Conclusions on Rio+20 and Durban Climate Conference [viewed]

9 March 2012: The first Environment Council under the Danish Presidency concluded with the adoption of conclusions on follow-up to the Durban Climate Change Conference, and on the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). Other items debated included "A Roadmap to a low-carbon economy in 2050" and the Programme for the Environment and Climate Action (LIFE).

EEA Releases Preliminary Data on Emissions Ceilings Directive Limits [viewed]

EEA22 February 2012: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released preliminary data that shows that 12 countries have exceeded the 2010 emissions limits under the EU National Emission Ceilings (NEC) Directive, which covers: sulphur dioxide (SO2); nitrogen oxides (NOx); non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs); and ammonia (NH3). NOx and NMVOCs are greenhouse gases (GHGs) contributing to climate change.

European Finance Ministers Adopt Conclusions on Durban Follow-up [viewed]

EU21 February 2012: During the Council meeting on Economic and Financial Affairs, European Finance Ministers adopted conclusions on "Climate Finance – Follow-up to the Durban Conference," which welcome the approval of the governing instrument for the Green Climate Fund (GCF) at the Durban Climate Change Conference, the work programme on long-term finance, and the decision on financing for REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries).

EEA Reports Recommend Environmental Tax Reform [viewed]

9 January 2012: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released two reports on European Tax Reform (ETR). The reports, titled “Environmental Tax Reform in Europe: Opportunities for Eco-innovation” and “Environmental Tax Reform in Europe: Implications for Income Distribution,” highlight that implementing the ERT could spur eco-innovation, create jobs, and result in environmental benefits, including greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions.
