EEA Report Assesses Progress Towards a Green Economy in Europe [viewed]
16 May 2012: In the lead up to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), the European Environment Agency (EEA) has produced a publication titled "Environmental Indicator Report 2012." The Report assesses progress within the EU to support the transition to a green economy, and presents established indicators that illustrate progress towards improving resource efficiency and indicators that depict the risk of passing environmental thresholds.
8 May 2012: At the opening session of the European Union (EU)-China urbanization partnership, the EU's Commissioner for Energy, Günther Oettinger, announced that the Covenant of Mayors will play a critical role in the upcoming EU-China Mayors' Forum, enhancing opportunities for sharing best practices and peer-to-peer cooperation.
14 May 2012: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released a report on the challenges posed by climate change to urban areas in Europe and how cities can adapt to climate change. The report identifies climate change challenges and responses, describes means of planning urban adaptation, and examines how multi-level governance enables urban adaptation.
8 May 2012: An Informal Ministerial Roundtable on Climate Change brought together representatives from 30 countries, including from least developed countries (LDCs) and the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), to build on the achievements of the Durban Climate Change Conference. The meeting, which was hosted by the EU, also provided an opportunity for Ministers to discuss the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
3 May 2012: The European Commission Vice-President responsible for the Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes, addressed the Smart Energy and Sustainable Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Conference, calling for Europe to use ICT to address the “challenge of managing energy resources.”
3 May 2012: European Commission President José Manuel Durão Barroso and Chinese Vice-Premier Li Keqiang met in Brussels, Belgium, in the First EU-China High Level Meeting on Energy, which saw the signing of a number of agreements and declarations.
27 April 2012: High-level political representatives from ten Caribbean islands have formed the Caribbean Overseas Countries and Territories (OCT) Council, which will focus on sustainable development, including work on climate change and renewable energy, in its cooperation with the EU.
