UNEP: World Glaciers Need Better Monitoring [viewed]

Global Glaciers Changes: facts and figures The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the

World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS) launched a new facts and figures report

on glaciers and ice caps during a side event on 1 September 2008, in Geneva,

Switzerland, during the 29th plenary session of the Intergovernmental

Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). “Global Glacier Changes: Facts and Figures”

presents recent fluctuations of glaciers and ice caps and underlines an overall

trend of glaciers' retreat. Wilfried Haeberli, Director of WGMS, noted that

glaciers are unique demonstration objects of global climate change.

Organization's (WHO) Commission on Social Determinants of Health calls for

Gender Perspectives: Integrating Disaster Risk Reduction into Climate Change Adaptation, Good Practices and Lessons Learned August 2008: This UN International Strategy for Disaster

Reduction (UN/ISDR) publication emphasizes the special vulnerability of women

to disaster risk, as well as their role in preparedness and response efforts.

Through a series of good practices from various parts of the world, the report

shows the linkages among women's experiences with natural resource management,

climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction (DRR).

OCHA Commissioned Report on Humanitarian Implications of Climate Change Released [viewed]

Humanitarian Implications of Climate Change 22 August 2008: A report commissioned by the UN Office for

the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and CARE International finds

that climate change greatly complicates, and could undermine, efforts to manage

the challenges presented by droughts, floods and cyclones. The study identifies

the most likely humanitarian implications of climate change for the next 20-30

year period.

Draft World Bank Strategy for Climate Change and Development Available for Public Comment [viewed]

Climate Change and Development 21 August 2008: The first phase of consultations on a

Strategic Framework on Climate Change and Development for the World Bank Group

(WBG) has concluded with the release of a draft document entitled “Development

and Climate Change - A Strategic Framework for the World Bank Group.” The

document will be finalized, taking into consideration comments received through

15 September 2008, and submitted to the Board of Directors, on 23 September

2008, and to the Development Committee, during the 2008 IMF/World Bank Group

Annual Meeting in October 2008.

IPCC Produces Introduction to the IPCC 2006 Guidelines [viewed]

IPCC 2006 Guidelines 21 August 2008: The IPCC National Greenhouse Gas Inventory

Programme (NGGIP) has produced a short introduction to the IPCC 2006

Guidelines, entitled “Primer.” This Primer is suitable for users of the 1996

guidelines who wish to understand the changes in the new 2006 Guidelines and to

start using them, and for those who are compiling inventories for the first time.
