Tenth Session of the Human Rights Council Discusses Relationship of Climate Change and Human Rights, Adopts OHCHR Report [viewed]

27 March 2009: The tenth special session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) convened from 2-27 March 2009, at the UN Office in Geneva, Switzerland. The Council considered and endorsed the Report of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on the relationship between climate change and human rights (A/HRC/10/61). The Council also adopted a resolution on human rights and climate change.

CDM Executive Board Publishes Report and Annexes of its 46th Meeting [viewed]

25 March 2009: The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Executive Board has published the report of its 46th meeting, which convened from 23-25 March 2009, at the UN Campus in Bonn, Germany. The document sets out the details of matters discussed during the meeting, including issues related to: small-scale CDM projects; programmes of activities under the CDM; and issuance of credits and the CDM registry.

UNFCCC Secretariat Releases Submissions by Grenada and Tuvalu on Consideration of the Scale of Emission Reductions to be Achieved by Annex I Parties [viewed]

25 March 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released submissions by parties on “Consideration of the scale of emission reductions to be achieved by Annex I Parties in aggregate, of the contribution of Annex I Parties individually or jointly, consistent with Article 4 of the Kyoto Protocol, to the scale of emission reductions to be achieved by Annex I Parties in aggregate, and of other relevant issues arising from the implementation of the work programme of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol as contained in document FCCC/KP/AWG/2008/8, paragraph 49 (c)” (FCCC/KP/AWG/2009/MISC.1/Add.1).

UNFCCC Secretariat Releases Reports on Technology Transfer under the Convention [viewed]

25 March 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released three reports related to technology transfer under the Convention. The three notes by the Chair of the Expert Group on Technology Transfer contain advance reports on: the long-term perspective to facilitate the development, deployment, diffusion and transfer of technologies; financing options; and performance indicators.

UNFCCC Secretariat Releases Australia's and the Philippines' Submissions on the Elements Contained in Paragraph 1 of the Bali Action Plan [viewed]

 24 March 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a compilation document containing the submissions by parties on “Ideas and proposals on the elements contained in paragraph 1 of the Bali Action Plan” (FCCC/AWGLCA/2009/MISC.1/Add.2). This document is an addendum to previous submissions from parties contained in documents FCCC/AWGLCA/2009/MISC.1/ Add.1 and FCCC/AWGLCA/2009/MISC.1, and contains two further submissions from Australia on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries, and from the Philippines on Proposed Mitigation Actions.

ICRISAT Research Provides Innovations for Adaptation of Dryland Agriculture [viewed]

25 March 2009: The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-arid Tropics (ICRISAT), a research center of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, has released research results and innovations for the adaptation of dryland agriculture to the impacts of climate change. The press release states that yield loss due to climate change can be minimized through the use of adapted and improved crop varieties together with soil and water management innovations. These strategies can be supported through capacity building and development of improved varieties and hybrids that are better targeted for climate change adaptation.

ILO Study Calls for Paving the Way to a Green Economy [viewed]

March 2009: The International Labour Organization (ILO) has released “The Financial and Economic Crisis: A Decent Work Response,” which examines current rescue efforts in 32 countries, including all members of the G20, and notes that demographic projections suggest that nearly 90 million net new jobs would be needed over 2009-2010 to absorb new entrants in the labor market and avoid a prolonged jobs gap. The study calls for enhanced cooperation among key international organizations and a reprioritization between these goals, to, inter alia: pave the way for a green economy; and enhance the Green Jobs agenda, considering that green technologies tend to be more job-rich than their carbon-intensive counterparts.

UNFCCC Posts Norwegian Document to REDD-Web Platform [viewed]
