24 September 2008: The first UN Private Sector Forum on the
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Food Sustainability convened on the
side of the opening of the UN General Assembly, to further business commitment
towards the MDGs and serve as platform to articulate business perspectives on
actions needed for their achievement.
24 September 2008: The International Labor Organization
(ILO), UN Environment Programme (UNEP), International Trade Union Confederation
and the International Organization of Employers have released the first
comprehensive study on the emergence of a “green economy” and its impact on the
world of work.
September 2008: The UN Department of Economic and Social
Affairs has prepared a policy brief on “An integrated approach needed for the
growing threat of climate-related insecurity.”
18 September 2008: Climate change is a major threat to
migratory waterbirds and international cooperation is required to reduce the
many pressures they face, according to a new report launched at the fourth
Meeting of the Parties (MOP) to the Agreement on the Conservation of
African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), taking place from 15-19 September
2008, in Antananarivo, Madagascar.
18 September 2008: On the eve of the opening of the 63rd
session of the UN General Assembly, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization
(FAO) released a briefing paper on the impact of high food prices on hunger,
which states that rising food prices pushed 75 million more people into hunger
and threatens efforts to realize the goal of halving the number of those in
hunger by 2015. The paper will inform a high-level event on the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs), to be held on 25 September.
September 2008: The International Food Policy Research
Institute (IFPRI) has released an advance copy of its report entitled ‘Global
Food Crises: Monitoring and Assessing Impact to Inform Policy Responses.'
11 September 2008: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has released the 2008 edition of ‘Energy, Electricity and Nuclear Power Estimates for the Period to 2030,' which predicts that, in line with growing global demand for energy, nuclear power will continue to expand in the coming decades.
11 September 2008: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has
released the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Report 2008, which finds that
the strong and sustained progress in reducing extreme poverty achieved by the
world is being undercut by higher prices, particularly of food and oil, and the
global economic slowdown.
10 September 2008: Presenting his latest report to the Human
Rights Council in Geneva, Olivier De Schutter, the Special Rapporteur on the
Right to Food, said rising food prices continue to jeopardize the right to
food, stressing that “any potential solution to the problem must be viewed
through the lens of human rights.”
12 September 2008: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) released a tool known as the “Biofuels Sustainability Scorecard” during the fourth Annual Western Hemisphere Energy Security and Cooperation Forum, held on 9 September 2008, at IDB's headquarters in Washington, DC, US.
