24 July 2009: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), a research center of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), are calling for the widespread uptake of “green agricultural practices” that have the potential to combat climate change, contribute to poverty eradication, boost food production, and provide sustainable sources of timber.
24 July 2009: The UN Secretary-General made a two-day official visit to China, during which he focused on climate change. In the morning of 24 July 2009, he participated in the launch of the “Green Lights” programme, which promotes energy-saving lighting that could cut China's energy consumption by 8%. He stated that China's approach to climate change can demonstrate to the world that the country is ready to take up a global leadership role in the 21st century.
23 July 2009: The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) presented a revised and expanded version of the Guide to the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) in Brazil, a guide commissioned by Brazil's Ministry of Science and Technology and drawn up under the sponsorship of the UN Development Programme (UNDP).
23 July 2009: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced that six universities from the US, UK, Spain and China have become the first academic institutions to join the Climate Neutral Network (CN Net), an initiative to promote global action to de-carbonize our economies and societies.
22 July 2009: The Alpha Company of the UN Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), working in the region of Kakata in western Liberia, has joined the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) worldwide Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign, and plans to plant a total of 1,000 trees by December 2009.
17 July 2009: “On the Frontlines of Climate Change,” an internet forum launched by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in partnership with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Secretariat of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), has published an article on the early impacts of climate change.
