20 October 2009: Two new projects developed by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) aim to help achieve a sustainable transformation of energy practices in South Africa and promote environmentally-friendly production in Tunisia.
15 October 2009: The International Energy Agency (IEA) celebrated its 35th anniversary and considered the theme “Responding to Energy Challenges in Partnership” during its two-day Ministerial meeting in Paris, France, from 14-15 October 2009. The meeting gathered energy ministers from the 28 IEA member countries to share views on key energy and environment challenges. In addition, IEA partner countries China, India and Russia participated for the first time together and guest speakers Henry Kissinger and Etienne Davignon - two key founders of the IEA - and Rajendra Pachauri, Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), helped mark the anniversary milestone.
16 October 2009: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) observed annual World Food Day, celebrated on 16 October, with events around the world focusing on the theme of “achieving food security in times of crisis.”
13 October 2009: Government, civil society and donor representatives met with 16 Amerindian communities in Guyana on a multi-stakeholder visit requested by the Global Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) Participants Committee, to approve a preparation grant for Guyana aimed at financing the REDD design phase.

13 October 2009: Large mammals, such as gorillas and elephants, are keystone species in African rainforests and should be included in the upcoming climate change negotiations in Copenhagen, according to UN Ambassador for the Year of the Gorilla Ian Redmond.
12 October 2009: The Regional Bureau for Arab States of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), jointly with the League of Arab States, organized a High-level Partners Meeting on Water Governance in Cairo, Egypt, from 12-13 October 2009.
October 2009: Bioversity International's Platform for Agrobiodiversity Research project on climate change is collecting information about initiatives on adaptation to climate change based on the use of agrobiodiversity.
9 October 2009: The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and the Ministry of Forestry of Indonesia have launched a partnership designed to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) and to enhance forest carbon stocks through enhanced community participation in conservation and management of the Meru Betiri National Park (MBNP), in the southeastern part of the East Java province.
6 October 2009: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will fund a feasibility study in Chile to explore sustainable biodiesel derived from forest industry byproducts and wood waste, which do not compete with food production.
