26 May 2011: The 40th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council, together with the tenth meeting of the Council of the Least Developed Country Fund (LDCF) and Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF), has approved an integrated land-use programme to fund investments to address priorities set by 12 African countries in West Africa and the Sahel.

IEA Calls for Policy Analysis of Renewable Energies in Remote Areas and Islands [viewed]

Event: UNITAR/WTI Course on Trade and Climate Change [viewed]

This course is organized by the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and World Trade Institute (WTI) as part of their suite of joint e-Learning courses on international trade policy and regulation. The aim of the course is to explore key legal and economic issues arising from the climate change debate, including the relationship between the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement and multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) that address climate change. It will also examine the legality under international trade rules, of domestic and international trade measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and measures designed to influence the behavior of trading partners. The course will begin on 20 June, and continue until 15 July.

IDB Invests in Solar Energy in Brazil [viewed]

UNDP Supports Hydropower in Tajikistan [viewed]

UNDP25 May 2011: UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark has visited a hydropower plant that supplies clean energy to a rural community nearby Dushanble, Tajikistan's capital. UNDP partnered with local communities to repair the mini hydropower plant and install new turbo-generator units, with the aim of contributing to poverty alleviation and raising the living standards in the village.

UNDP Supports Solar-Powered Systems in Lebanon [viewed]

UNDP24 May 2011: The UN Development Programme (UNDP), with funding from the Government of Spain, is supporting the project "Country Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Demonstration for the Recovery of Lebanon (CEDRO)," which aims to increase use of renewable energy sources, provide an alternative to expensive and polluting diesel generators, and reduce the consumption of national electricity supplies.
