European Commission Launches Strategy for Energy Union with Climate Change Policy [viewed]

EU-SE4ALL25 February 2015: The European Commission has adopted a framework strategy that aims to create, for the European Union, a resilient ‘Energy Union' with a forward-looking climate change policy. An annexed action plan presents fifteen "action points" for the coming years, including electricity market legislation, enhanced regional cooperation, increased funding for energy efficiency and a new renewable energy package. Two related communications focus on improved electricity interconnection and a vision for a global climate change agreement in Paris in December 2015.

Africa Conference Reaffirms Need for Meteorological, Hydrological Services [viewed]

wmo_au18 February 2015: The Third Session of the African Ministerial Conference on Meteorology (AMCOMET-3) adopted the Praia Ministerial Declaration, reaffirming the need to support National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) with adequate resources and institutional frameworks. The African Ministers responsible for meteorology also endorsed plans for a Regional Climate Centre (RCC) for Central Africa.

UNFCCC Parties Agree on Negotiating Text for 2015 Agreement [viewed]

adp2_813 February 2015: At the eighth part of the second session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP 2-8), delegates agreed on a text that will serve as the basis for negotiating a new climate change agreement. This new agreement is anticipated to be adopted at the Paris Climate Change Conference in December 2015.

G20 Finance Ministers Express Support for FfD, Tackling Tax Avoidance [viewed]

g20-turkey10 February 2015: Group of 20 (G20) finance ministers and central bank governors released a Communiqué from their first meeting under Turkey's presidency. The Communiqué expresses their full support to the G20-Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Base Erosion and Profit Shifting Project (BEPS), which aims to modernize international tax rules and tackle cross-border tax avoidance, and to the achievement of a successful outcome of the Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD3) “towards the implementation of the post-2015 development agenda.”

UNFCCC Releases Lima Climate Change Conference Reports [viewed]

UNFCCC2 February 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published reports of the Lima Climate Change Conference, held in December 2014. The reports include the proceedings of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC (FCCC/CP/2014/10) and cover action taken by the COP in three addenda. The proceedings (FCCC/KP/CMP/2014/9) of the 10th session of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties (CMP 10) to the Kyoto Protocol (FCCC/KP/CMP/2014/9) have also been published, with action taken by CMP 10 included in an addendum.

24th AU Summit Adopts Decisions on Post-2015 Negotiations, Gender Equality, Illicit Flows [viewed]

African Union (AU)31 January 2015: Participants called for women's empowerment in Africa as an important step in achieving the goals of Agenda 2063, at the 24th African Union (AU) Summit, which convened under the theme, ‘2015 Year of Women's Empowerment and Development towards Africa's Agenda 2063.' Delegates adopted the Agenda 2063 framework document and decisions on climate change, the post-2015 development agenda, trade, health and other issues. The Summit also included a presentation of the final report of the High Level Panel on Illicit Financial Flows.

CGRFA Finalizes State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources Report; Agrees on Guidelines on ABS and Genetic Diversity for Climate Adaptation [viewed]

cgrfa1526 January 2015: The fifteenth session of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN's (FAO) Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA 15) addressed a series of sectoral and cross-sectoral issues, including: animal, forest and plant genetic resources; access and benefit-sharing (ABS) for genetic resources for food and agriculture (GRFA); biodiversity and nutrition; and climate change and GRFA. The session was held from 19-23 January 2015, in Rome, Italy.

IRENA Assembly Re-Appoints Director-General, Highlights Growing Role of Renewables [viewed]

irenna518 January 2015: During the fifth meeting of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly, over 1,000 representatives from 150 countries and 115 international organizations discussed ways to accelerate the growth of renewable energy, considering in particular such challenges as energy security, climate change and the future financing of the organization. The Assembly also re-appointed Adnan Amin as Director-General of IRENA.
