African Countries Adopt Sustainable Transport Framework [viewed]

africa-sustinable-transport30 October 2014: Senior officials representing over 42 African countries have adopted a framework for a transition to sustainable transport, with a view to curbing air pollution, boosting the use of sustainable fuels and improving road safety. The roadmap aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the use of low-emission non-motorized transport, and increasing the quality of public transport and investment in clean technologies.

IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee Approves Polar Code Provisions [viewed]

IMO20 October 2014: The 67th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has approved provisions of the draft International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code), and adopted draft amendments to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). The meeting also adopted resolutions supporting the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004 (BWM Convention), and considered a greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions study, energy efficiency in ships, and issues relating to fuel consumption and quality.

Adaptation Fund Board Approves Six Projects Totaling US$33 Million [viewed]

Adaptation Fund10 October 2014: The Adaptation Fund Board (AFB) has announced it will fund six climate resilience projects, in Costa Rica, India, Kenya and South Africa. The decision represents a doubling in the direct access finance provided by the Fund. In addition, the Board approved almost US$150,000 in South-South grants to provide training on the Fund's accreditation process so that more countries will be able to take advantage of direct access finance.

European Council Agrees on 2030 Climate and Energy Policy Framework [viewed]

European Council24 October 2014: The European Council has endorsed a binding EU target of at least a 40% domestic reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 compared to 1990, and will submit its contribution under the UNFCCC by the first quarter of 2015, in accordance with the timeline agreed at the 19th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 19). The target is part of the 2030 Climate and Energy Policy Framework agreed by the European Council at its meeting on 23-24 October 2014.

CBD COP 12 Commits to Funding Increase, Highlights Biodiversity's Contribution to Sustainable Development Agenda [viewed]

cop1217 October 2014: Held from 6-17 October 2014, in Pyeongchang, the Republic of Korea, the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted a series of decisions, including the 'Pyeongchang roadmap for the enhanced implementation of the Strategic Plan and achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets,' addressing resource mobilization, capacity building, scientific and technical cooperation, linking biodiversity and poverty eradication, and monitoring implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020.

UNECE Agrees on Charter on Sustainable Housing [viewed]

UNECE8 October 2014: The UN Economic Commission for Europe's (UNECE) Committee on Housing and Land Management (CHLM) has agreed on the text of a Geneva UN Charter on Sustainable Housing. While technically nonbinding, the Charter represents a political commitment by the 56 UNECE Member States to address a wide variety of environmental, health and social issues associated with housing, and provides guidelines and benchmarks for monitoring progress. It also supports policies and actions, and encourages international cooperation at all levels. The text was agreed during the Committee's 75th session, held on 8-9 October 2014, in Geneva, Switzerland.

Samoa Partnerships Commitment4 September 2014: The Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) took place from 1-4 September 2014, in Apia, Samoa, on the theme of ‘The Sustainable Development of SIDS Through Genuine and Durable Partnerships.' The Conference produced an outcome document, titled ‘SIDS Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway,' which was negotiated during the preparatory process at UN Headquarters in New York, US, and adopted during the closing plenary.

WHO Conference Calls for Strengthening Health Resilience to Climate Change [viewed]

Indian Flag8 August 2014: The 18th BASIC Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change brought together representatives from Brazil, India, South Africa and China (BASIC), who adopted a joint statement emphasizing the need to finalize the elements of a draft negotiating text for the 2015 agreement at the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC, to be held in Lima, Peru, in December 2014.
