mitigation_update22 June 2016: The first five months of 2016 have served as a reminder of the urgency of mitigating climate change as each month, January-May, has set global temperature records, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). On 17 June, the WMO announced May's record, saying combined average temperature over land and ocean surfaces was 0.87°C above the 20th century average of 14.8°C. May is the 13th consecutive month to set a global temperature high.

Norway Ratifies Paris Agreement, Promises to Go Carbon Neutral by 2030 [viewed]

norway-flag20 June 2016: The Government of Norway deposited its instrument of ratification of the Paris Agreement on climate change with the UN, making it the 18th Party to the UNFCCC to do so. Its ratification comes on the heels of the country's pledge to become carbon neutral in 14 years. On 14 June, the Norwegian Parliament voted to reduce and offset carbon emissions so that its emissions are net zero by 2030, two decades earlier than the country's previous pledge.

Capacity Building and Technology Update: SB 44 Outcomes Focus on Implementation of Paris Agreement, GEF Establishes CBIT Trust Fund [viewed]

UNFCCC - GEF - UNITAR18 June 2016: The 44th sessions of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 44) and Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 44) and the first session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Paris Agreement (APA 1) were held in Bonn, Germany, from 16-26 May 2016. The sessions presented the first opportunity for Parties to consider Paris mandates on capacity building and technology development and transfer, including the terms of reference (ToR) for the Paris Committee on Capacity-building, the Paris Agreement's technology framework, and the scope and modalities for the periodic assessment of the Technology Mechanism in the context of how it serves the Paris Agreement.

SE4ALL16 June 2016: The 2030 goals of the UN's Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) initiative are to ensure universal access to modern energy services, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency, and double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix. Member States Elect Peter Thomson, Fiji, as UNGA 71 President [viewed]

Fiji Flag13 June 2016: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) elected Peter Thomson, Permanent Representative of Fiji to the UN, as the President of the 71st session of the UNGA. Thomson will replace Mogens Lykketoft of Denmark, who is serving as the President of UNGA 70.

Mitigation Update: Work Continues on Aviation, Black Carbon Emissions, Regions Cooperate on Clean Energy [viewed]

icao_arctic_adb_afdb13 June 2016: According to a policy paper from the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, “carbon-intensive companies are not ready for the impact of the Paris Agreement's commitments.” The authors, economists Nicholas Stern and Dimitri Zenghelis, submitted the paper to the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures, arguing that the Financial Stability Board (FSB) should create robust reporting guidance on climate risks.

Europe Ministers Translate 2030 Agenda into Concrete Commitments on Green Economy, Clean Air, ESD [viewed]

efe810 June 2016: Participants at the Eighth Environment for Europe (EfE) Ministerial Conference adopted a Ministerial Declaration and agreed on a number of outcomes related to the green economy, air quality and human health, and education for sustainable development (ESD). During the Conference, the UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) launched the sixth Global Environmental Outlook (GEO-6) Assessment for the pan-European region.

GEF Council Marks 25th Anniversary, Approves Work Program for US$398.68 Million, CBIT Trust Fund [viewed]

gef509 June 2016: The 50th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council, which marked the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the GEF, approved a Work Program comprising 38 project concepts and four programmatic frameworks, with total resources amounting to US$398.68 million. In addition, the GEF Council established a new trust fund for the Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT), which was created in response to a request by the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties, as reflected in the decision adopting the Paris Agreement on climate change.
