Event: Sixth BRICS Summit [viewed]

The sixth Summit of the BRICS, which comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, will convene in Fortaleza and Brasília, Brazil, from 15-16 July, under the theme 'Inclusive Growth, Sustainable Solutions'. The Summit will discuss the establishment of the BRICS Development Bank, aimed at financing infrastructure and sustainable development projects, and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement for assisting countries of the bloc. Discussions will also be held on social inclusion and development. The Summit is expected to result in the signing of two primary financial agreements, an action plan for common social indicators methodologies, and the Fortaleza Declaration containing views of the group on matters on the international agenda and of cooperation within the BRICS. Preceding the Summit, meetings of the BRICS finance ministers, central bank governors and ministers of trade, the BRICS Business Forum and Business Council, and the BRICS Financal Forum will be held on 14 July in Fortaleza.

Pacific Partnerships Meeting Focuses on Gender, Climate Change [viewed]

US, China to Cooperate on Energy and Forests to Tackle Climate Change [viewed]

WMO Climatology Commission Calls for More Frequent Climate Baselines [viewed]

WMO9 July 2014: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Commission for Climatology convened to adopt a 2014-2018 work plan aimed at accelerating national efforts to deliver and use climate services, and address issues such as data management, climate prediction and capacity building. The Commission also recommended that governments adopt a two-tier approach to updating the 30-year baselines used by scientists and meteorological services to monitor the weather and climate, and make comparisons with past conditions.

FCPF Carbon Fund Selects Three Country Programmes [viewed]

The Republic of the Congo, which also presented its Emission Reductions Program Idea Note (ER-PIN), was provisionally selected.

Event: 19th Meeting of the Major Economies Forum [viewed]

Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, will co-chair this meeting of the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate. The MEF provides a platform for dialogue and political impetus bringing together the main greenhouse gas emitting countries. The 19th meeting will be co-hosted by the United States. Discussions will focus on issues related to the new global climate change agreement which is set to be adopted at the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 21) and 11th session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP) to be held in 2015 in Paris. The MEF meeting will be followed immediately by the Petersberg Climate Dialogue, which will gather Ministers from about 35 countries, co-hosted by Germany and Peru, and will serve as a preparatory meeting for COP 20 and CMP 10, which are to take place in Lima, Peru, in December 2014.

Event: Second Meeting of the UN Environment Assembly [viewed]

The UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) will convene for the second time in 2016. The UNEA of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) represents the highest level of governance of international environmental affairs in the UN system. The Rio+20 conference agreed in June 2012 to strengthen and upgrade UNEP through measures including universal membership of its Governing Council and ensuring the active participation of all relevant stakeholders. In March 2013, the 67th session of the UN General Assembly changed the designation of the Governing Council of UNEP to become UNEA, reflecting the intention to elevate its status.

Event: ICAO Environmental ​Seminars in the APAC Region [viewed]

As part of a series of two environmental seminars held back-to-back in each region of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Aviation and Environment Seminar will be held from 28-29 October 2014, and the States' Action Plans Seminar will be held from 29-30 October 2014, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for the Asia and Pacific (APAC) Region. The seminars are supporting ICAO Member States in their efforts to institute climate-friendly aviation. The first seminar, intended for civil aviation, environment, energy, industry, civil society, academia, and National Action Plan (NAP) representatives, as well as the general public, will cover: aviation and environmental outlook, aircraft noise, local air quality, global emissions, sustainable alternative fuels, market-based measures, technology, operations, green airports, States' action plans, assistance to States and financing​. The second seminar is for NAP Focal Points to learn about ICAO Guidance on State Action Plans; the Action Plan Emissions Reduction (APER) website, supporting documents and ICAO tools; assistance for the implementation of the Action Plan; and States' best practices.
