Asian Ministerial DRR Conference Adopts Bangkok Declaration [viewed]

AMCDRR-626 June 2014: The Sixth Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) concluded with the adoption of the 'Bangkok Declaration,' which commends the progress made under the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) on capacity building, early warning systems, awareness-raising and understanding risk. Looking forward, the Declaration points to the need for increased attention to local resilience, scaling up public investment and utilizing public-private partnerships.

Our Ocean Conference Garners Over $800 Million in Ocean Conservation Commitments [viewed]

our-ocean17 June 2014: US Secretary of State John Kerry announced that the US State Department's 'Our Ocean' conference resulted in more than US$800 million in government and private sector commitments to conserve the ocean and its resources. The conference aimed to develop strategies for protecting oceans through three pillars focused on: sustainable fisheries; marine pollution from land-based and ocean-based sources; and ocean acidification, as addressed in the ‘Our Ocean Action Plan.'

Event: Fifth Petersberg Climate Dialogue [viewed]

The meetings of the Petersberg Climate Dialogue, an initiative of the German Government, are co-chaired by Germany and the upcoming Presidency of the UN climate negotiations (Mexico in 2010; South Africa in 2011; Qatar in 2012; Poland in 2013; and Peru in 2014). The Dialogue brings together representatives from all regions of the world and all negotiating groups. Discussions are held in an informal style to facilitate an "open and honest" debate. The fifth Petersberg Climate Dialogue will take place under the theme "Addressing the urgency – stepping up our contributions," and will aim to introduce new ideas into the negotiations and discuss new strategies in preparation for the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC, scheduled to take place in Lima, Peru, in December 2014. The meeting will be presided over by Federal Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks and Peruvian Minister for Environment Manuel Pulgar-Vidal.

World Day to Combat Desertification Highlights Climate, Desertification Links [viewed]

world_day_to_combat_desertification_201417 June 2014: To commemorate the World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) 2014, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) organized, and the World Bank hosted, in partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF), TerrAfrica and Connect4Climate, a day-long 'Global Observance Event' on ecosystem-based adaptation under the theme, 'Land Belongs to the Future – Let's Climate Proof it.' The event fostered high-level discussions on common solutions to the interlinked challenges of climate change and desertification.

Central Asian Countries Partner on Regional Climate Change Strategy [viewed]

World Bank17 June 2014: Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), government officials, educators and development professionals attending the Second Central Asia Climate Knowledge Forum have proposed a Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program for Central Asia (CAMP4CA). CAMP4CA will be a regional effort to boost cross-country climate change policy planning, pilot investments across governments and jointly implement long-term climate-related projects.

UNITAR Workshop Trains Asia-Pacific Policymakers in Adaptation, DRR [viewed]

Event: 16th Session of the WMO Commission for Climatology (CCl) [viewed]

The 16th Session of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Commission for Climatology (CCI-16) will convene in Heidelberg, Germany, to: hear reports from the Secretary-General on the World Climate Services Programme and its contribution to the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS); review ongoing activities; address CCI strategic planning; and consider priorities for the Commission's future work on climate data management, monitoring and assessment, prediction and projection, user interfaces for climate adaptation and risk management, capacity development and Climate Services Information System (CSIS). The Session will also elect officers and decide the workplan and future structure for 2014-2018. CCI is one of WMO's eight technical commissions and coordinates collaborative work among climatologists worldwide. The Commission meets once every four years.
