Eye on Earth Launches Data Innovation, Visualization, Blogging Competitions [viewed]

Eye on Earth16 July 2015: The organizers of the Eye on Earth Summit have announced three data innovation challenges for which the finalists will have the opportunity to present their ideas at the Summit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The three competitions launched are the Data Innovation Showcase, Data Visualization Challenge and Blogging Competition, all of which support the Summit in its focus on using data to secure a better future for the planet.

France Hosts Informal Ministerial Consultations [viewed]

France-Flag21 July 2015: The French Government hosted the first of a series of informal ministerial consultations to prepare for the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC, which will take place in November-December 2015. The consultations brought together approximately 40 delegations, including 30 ministers, who discussed: the overall balance of the draft climate change agreement; its level of ambition; and the degree of differentiation that should be retained in order to take into account the situation and levels of development of the different UN member States.

World Summit Issues Call to Conscience for the Climate [viewed]

why-do-i-care21 July 2015: A 'Call to Conscience for the Climate' was officially launched at the World Summit of Conscience. The Summit gathered people from many of the world's religions and wisdoms to discuss fundamental moral questions related to climate change, such as why we should care, how one can show one cares, and how to inspire the world to care. The Summit also saw the launch of the "Why Do I Care?" campaign, which has so far garnered over 1,200 participants.

North-Pacific SIDS Prepare for Paris Conference, INDCs [viewed]

APEC Advances Sustainable City Development Efforts [viewed]

apec16 July 2015: Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies have announced accelerated support for sustainable city development in the region. According to the APEC Energy Working Group, APEC officials are advancing technical support for solar-powered, energy-efficient buildings and high efficiency lighting, improved vehicle fuel efficiency labeling and consumer information, and accessible green energy financing.

FfD3 Concludes with Adoption of Addis Ababa Action Agenda [viewed]

iisdrs_FfD316 July 2015: The Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD3) has concluded with the adoption of the Outcome Document of the Conference, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (AAAA). In support of the AAAA, a number of significant partnerships were launched during FfD3, including: the Addis Tax Initiative, which will support strengthening domestic tax systems; the Global Financing Facility in Support of Every Woman Every Child, which brings together countries, donors and the private sector; and the Commission on Financing Global Education.

IISD GSI Event: Fossil-Fuel Subsidies Reform Can Finance Development [viewed]

gsi-fffsr 14 July 2015: Reforming fossil-fuel subsidies can free up funds for investing in sustainable development and reduce global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by approximately 10%, according to a high-level side event held at the Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD3) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Participants also underlined that current low international energy prices create a window of opportunity for fossil-fuel subsidy reform.

IRENA Conference Launches Martinique Action Plan for Renewables Deployment on SIDS [viewed]

IRENA14 July 2015: A conference organized by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has launched an action plan to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy in small island developing states (SIDS). The Martinique Action Plan outlines practical steps for deploying renewable energy resources and technologies in SIDS. It also seeks to demonstrate commitment of 27 SIDS and 19 development partners to the IRENA of SIDS Lighthouses Initiative in the run-up to the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference.

Event: Second Annual Meeting of the Innovation for Cool Earth Forum (ICEF) [viewed]

The second annual Innovation for Cool Earth Forum (ICEF) is being held with a view to addressing climate change through innovation. Hosted by the Japanese Government, the event will bring together policymakers, business leaders and researchers for "an energy- and environment-focused version of the World Economic Forum". Organizers of the event are working with the French Presidency of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC to make the event an important milestone on the road to a global climate agreement at COP 21 in December 2015. Plenary sessions at the conference will include: principal issues in the future greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction; future perspectives from innovators, visionaries and global leaders; and future strategy for climate change. A number of parallel sessions will take an in-depth look at specific technologies, sectors and energy sources. In addition a 'Networking Plaza' will be held on 6 October 2015.
