Member States Seek to "Break with the Past" in Post-2015 Declaration [viewed]

photo_post2015_in220 February 2015: The second session of the intergovernmental negotiations on the post-2015 development agenda focused on the declaration component of the outcome that will be adopted at the Summit of Heads of State and Government on the post-2015 development agenda in September 2015. A summary of the discussion will be produced by the Secretariat, for reference, while the “discussion document” circulated and discussed during the meeting remains “a document without status” but will assist in creating the zero draft of the Summit outcome, according to the Co-Facilitators.

Africa Conference Reaffirms Need for Meteorological, Hydrological Services [viewed]

wmo_au18 February 2015: The Third Session of the African Ministerial Conference on Meteorology (AMCOMET-3) adopted the Praia Ministerial Declaration, reaffirming the need to support National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) with adequate resources and institutional frameworks. The African Ministers responsible for meteorology also endorsed plans for a Regional Climate Centre (RCC) for Central Africa.

GCOS, IPCC, UNFCCC Workshop Focuses on Observations to Support Adaptation [viewed]

gcos_ipcc_unfccc12 February 2015: The Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held a joint workshop, titled ‘Enhancing observations to support preparedness and adaptation in a changing climate – Learning from the IPCC 5th Assessment Report,' which aimed to enhance systematic observations and related capacity, especially in developing countries, in light of the detection of observed impacts, exposure and vulnerability to climate change, and in support of assessing the risks of climate change and adaptation planning.

Event: 34th International Energy Workshop [viewed]

The 2015 International Energy Workshop (IEW) will take place from 3-5 June in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates. Hosted by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the workshop will focus on, inter alia: climate change mitigation and adaptation; the economics of renewable energy sources; linkages between climate, air pollution and energy security; energy and economic growth in emerging economies; and energy poverty alleviation. The workshop is aimed at researchers and practitioners in developed and developing countries, and will comprise thematic sessions, during which papers presenting results of scientific or pratical experiences on the economics of energy and climate change will be discussed.

Asia-Pacific Countries to Jointly Address Hydro-Meteorological Disasters [viewed]

logos_escap_typhoon13 February 2015: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) hosted a meeting during which representatives from 17 countries agreed to work together to build resilience to hydro-meteorological disasters through enhanced regional cooperation, and to share knowledge, review scientific and technological advances, and identify gaps across the region. The joint session of the ESCAP/World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Typhoon Committee (TC) and the WMO/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones (PTC) was the first time the two groups met jointly in 18 years.

UNCCD Prepares for 3rd Scientific Conference [viewed]

UNFCCC Parties Agree on Negotiating Text for 2015 Agreement [viewed]

adp2_813 February 2015: At the eighth part of the second session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP 2-8), delegates agreed on a text that will serve as the basis for negotiating a new climate change agreement. This new agreement is anticipated to be adopted at the Paris Climate Change Conference in December 2015.

Efficient Lighting Workshop Identifies Policy Options for ASEAN [viewed]

lites_asia_unep6 February 2015: A regional lites.asia workshop on lighting policy, convened by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), considered opportunities for ensuring adequate market surveillance and harmonized policy for efficient lighting in Asia and the Pacific. More than 70 stakeholder representatives participated in the meeting, which identified policy options for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the broader region.
