ipcc1025 March 2014: The 10th session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group II (WGII-10) and 38th session of the IPCC (IPCC-38) are expected to endorse the findings of the second part of the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) addressing climate change impacts, adaptation and vulnerability.

Event: 13th Meeting of the Cartagena Dialogue for Progressive Action [viewed]

The 13th meeting of countries participating in the Cartagena Dialogue for Progressive Action will be hosted by the Republic of the Marshall Islands, in Majuro. The Cartagena Dialogue for Progressive action, or Cartagena Dialogue, is an informal space “open to countries working towards an ambitious, comprehensive, and legally binding regime in the UNFCCC, and committed, domestically, to becoming or remaining low carbon economies.” The Dialogue aims to “discuss openly and constructively the reasoning behind each others' positions, exploring areas of convergence and potential areas of joint action.” The Cartagena Dialogue consists of around 30 participating countries, and it is one of the few groups within the UN climate negotiations that brings together negotiators from the global North and South.

Event: Africa Clean Energy Summit [viewed]

The 2014 African Clean Energy Summit (ACES) will bring together decision makers, policymakers, industry leaders, investors, experts and media under the theme of Sustainable Energy for All. Participants from around the world are invited to explore the challenges and opportunities for renewable energy through an international exhibition, technical sessions, business forums and other concurrent activities. The event will also inaugurate the Africa Women Roundtable on Clean Energy and Energy Poverty and the Africa Children and Youth Roundtable on Clean Energy and Green Lifestyle. The African Union Commission (AUC) and Government of Nigeria are organizing the Summit, with support from various other partners.

IPU Adopts Resolution on Risk Resilient Development [viewed]

Ipu21 March 2014: The 130th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) concluded with the adoption of a resolution on risk resilient development, which: underscores that “reducing disaster risk and protecting people's lives are the legal responsibility of all public representatives;” and urges members to enhance their oversight role and “take immediate action to review existing legislation related to disaster risk reduction (DRR).”

ECLAC, CCRIF Meeting Evaluates Disaster, Loss and Damage Assessments [viewed]

eclac-ccrif7 March 2014: The UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Caribbean Catastrophic Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) hosted a meeting of Caribbean Government agencies, emergency management professionals, and civil society representatives to discuss assessments of disasters occurring in the region from 2006-2013.

Event: FCPF Carbon Fund Ninth Meeting (CF9) [viewed]

The meeting of the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) Carbon Fund will review funding proposals from Chile, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Mexico, Nepal, Peru, and the Republic of the Congo. The meeting will also consider General Conditions of a future Emission Reductions Payment Agreement (ERPA) and review the Pricing Approach.

Event: Joint Meeting of the Adaptation Committee and the Nairobi Work Programme [viewed]

This joint meeting of the Adaptation Committee and the Nairobi work programme on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change (NWP), titled 'Available tools for the use of indigenous and traditional knowledge and practices for adaptation, needs of local and indigenous communities, and the application of gender-sensitive approaches and tools for adaptation,' will seek to address questions related to these two themes. On indigenous and traditional knowledge, the meeting will address: best practices, trends, needs and limitations in the use of indigenous, traditional and local knowledge and practices; collecting, evaluating and disseminating such knowledge and practices for use by local, national and international adaptation practitioners; integrating such knowledge and practices with scientific knowledge in adaptation planning and implementation; and effectively engaging holders of indigenous, traditional and local knowledge and practices in the adaptation process. Regarding gender‐sensitive approaches and tools, the meeting will explore, inter alia: existing gender‐sensitive tools and approaches that can enhance understanding and assess impacts, vulnerability and adaptation; and how to integrate such approaches and tools across adaptation processes and ensure that adaptation initiatives are gender sensitive.

JI Supervisory Committee Adopts Business, Management and Work Plans [viewed]

UNFCCC18 March 2014: The Joint Implementation Supervisory Committee (JISC) has adopted its business plan and management plan (MAP) for 2014-2015, which set out, respectively, the JI's strategic direction for 2014 and 2015, and the work, capacity needs and estimated resource requirements necessary to implement the business plan. It also approved its 2014 workplan, which provides information on the work planned for each meeting of the JISC in 2014.
