The fifteenth Summit meeting of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC)3 August 2008: The fifteenth Summit meeting of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), held from 2-3 August 2008, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, concluded with the adoption of the Colombo Declaration and the Colombo Statement on Food Security. In the Declaration, entitled “Partnership for Growth for Our People,” the Heads of State and Government reiterate the need for increased regional cooperation in tackling climate change, in particular for capacity building, the development of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects, and awareness raising.

ITU Telecom Asia Forum to Address Climate Change. Business opportunities seen in adopting environment-friendly ICT 4 August 2008: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Telecom Asia 2008 will be held from

2-5 September, 2008 in Bangkok Thailand. The event is being

organized on the theme “New Generation New Values,” by ITU Telecom, a part of

the ITU. The event will comprise an exhibition and a forum, and aims to provide

a platform for the information and communications technology (ICT) community to

explore the growth and investment opportunities available in the Asia Pacific

Highlighting Development, Climate and Food Crises, UN Secretary-General Urges Copenhagen Agreement [viewed]

29 July 2008: In a message to the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned

Movement in Tehran, Iran, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged a successful

conclusion to climate talks in Copenhagen in 2009, noting that progress towards

the Millennium Development Goals and ensuring food security have been severely

undermined by the climate crisis.

Responses to Climate Change Bear Major Development Implications: Monterrey Review Process Draft Outcome Document Released [viewed]

Draft Doha Outcome Document on Reviewing the Implementation of the Monterrey Consensus 30 July 2008: The President of the UN General Assembly issued a draft outcome

document for the Monterrey Consensus Review Conference where countries would

recognize that responses to the climate change problem have “major development

implications” and “commit to respond to the additional financial requirements

that meet these new challenges with appropriate, concrete international

cooperation measures and policies.” The Review Conference, to be held in Doha,

Qatar, from November 29 to 2 December 2008, would also highlight that efforts

to address climate change should “promote increased trade in environmental

goods and not result in environmentally-based trade distortions.”
