CBD Secretariat's Quarterly Report Includes Activities on Biodiversity and Climate Change [viewed]

© CBD5 May 2009: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has published the quarterly report on the administration of the Convention, covering the period from January-March 2009. In relation to biodiversity and climate change, the report highlights the following activities: a capacity development workshop for the Pacific on National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans, the Mainstreaming of Biodiversity and the Integration of Climate Change (2-6 February 2009, Nadi, Fiji); and an online dialogue on the links between biodiversity, climate change adaptation and risks and vulnerabilities (9-20 March 2009) in preparation for the second meeting of the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group on Biodiversity and Climate Change.

Event: UNFCCC COP 15 and COP/MOP 5 [viewed]

These meetings will coincide with the 31st meetings of the UNFCCC's subsidiary bodies. Under the “roadmap” agreed at the UN Climate Change Conference in Bali in December 2007, COP 15 and COP/MOP 5 are expected to finalize an agreement on a framework for combating climate change post-2012, when the Kyoto Protocol's first commitment period ends.

UN/ISDR Organizes Second Africa Regional Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction Consultative Meeting [viewed]

11 May 2009: The Second Africa Regional Platform (ARP) on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Consultative Meeting convened at UN Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, from 5-7 May 2009. The event, themed “Accelerate progress in implementing the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) and the Africa Regional Strategy for DRR,” was organized by the African Union Commission (AUC) and the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR).

UN Secretary-General Highlights Role of Parliamentarians in Tackling Climate Change [viewed]

© IPU7 May 2009: In a message delivered to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Conference on the Global Economic Crisis, held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 7-8 May 2009, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon emphasized the role that parliamentarians play in tackling some of the current global crises, including climate change, the financial crisis and the recent H1N1 flu outbreak.

Event: International Conference on Green Industry in Asia: Managing the Transition to Resource-Efficient and Low-Carbon Industries [viewed]

This conference, jointly organized by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), will seek to showcase how industries in the Asia and the Pacific region can effectively manage and benefit from the transition to resource-efficient and low carbon industries, whilst sustaining rapid economic growth and trade competitiveness.

Event: ITU Symposium on ICTs and Climate Change [viewed]

This symposium, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), is the third in the series under the ITU's initiative on Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and climate change. It aims to highlight and discuss various issues that could help address the problem of climate change, including: ICT policies and policy frameworks to address climate change; reducing the carbon footprint of the ICT sector; using ICTs to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in other sectors; climate monitoring; climate change adaptation; deforestation; ICTs and emergencies; impact of new technologies on climate change; green technologies to mitigate climate change and financing solutions to climate change.
