Global Climate Week officially runs from 21-25 September 2009, involving activities by corporations, community groups and individuals around the world. It coincides with the Summit on Climate Change that UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will host on 22 September 2009, at UN Headquarters in New York, US.

Event: UNCCD COP 9 High-Level Segment [viewed]

A special high-level segment on fostering the implementation of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) 10-year strategic plan and framework to enhance the implementation of the Convention will include three ministerial-level round table discussions on the following topics: global trends of desertification, land degradation and drought – liaison with other problems and challenges for decision makers and stakeholders; desertification/land degradation and climate change – what role for the land in the ongoing negotiations for a new climate change regime at Copenhagen?; and partnerships and institutions for combating desertification, land degradation and drought – the path to improvement.

Event: ADB-ESCAP Workshop on Transport and Climate Change [viewed]

This workshop, organized by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), aims to: convince climate negotiators and senior transport officials of the importance of the applicability of a new climate change agreement; clarify the role of transport in the envisaged enhanced action on adaptation, mitigation, financing, technology, and capability building; and discuss the role of the revised and new instruments referred to in the draft negotiation texts (CDM, Sectoral Crediting, Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA), and Measuring, Reporting and Verification (MRV)).
