UN Secretary-General Calls for the Non-Aligned Movement's Support to Move Toward a Greener Economy [viewed]

© NAM15 July 2009: In a speech to the High-Level Segment of the 15th Non-Aligned Movement Summit, which took place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, from 15-16 July 2009, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated that, just as when the Non-Aligned Movement was founded, the world today faces complex crises threatening development and security. He pointed to the severe economic and financial crisis, and the effort to “Seal the Deal” on climate change in Copenhagen later this year.

IPCC Chair Addresses AR5 Scoping Meeting [viewed]

13 July 2009: In an speech delivered at the opening ceremony of the Scoping Meeting for the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which is taking place in Venice, Italy, from 13-17 July 2009, IPCC Chair Rajendra Pachauri said one could believe that “the finest hour of the IPCC came and went in 2007 and 2008, particularly with the award of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007” and the release of the Fourth Assessment Report, but he said “the finest hour is yet to come.”

Under the theme innovative cities, the Forum brought together representatives from government, civil society and the private sector to discuss urban challenges, as well as sustainable and innovative solutions through public-private community partnerships.

Event: Forum on Forests and Climate Change – to Copenhagen and Beyond [viewed]

As part of the XIII World Forestry Congress, the global forest community is invited to this Forum for a debate aiming to produce a recommendation of a technical nature to the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC in Copenhagen in December 2009. Sessions and panel discussions will address land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF), reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD), and climate change impacts on forests and people.

Event: Forum on Forests and Energy – Balancing Risks and Opportunities [viewed]

As part of the XIII World Forestry Congress, the objectives of this Forum are to: assess and share the current state of knowledge about the risks and opportunities for forestry in future bioenergy markets; and assist forest policy makers to provide informed inputs into national and international policy discussions on bioenergy.
