17 July 2008: The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) concluded
its three-day Humanitarian Affairs Segment by convening a panel discussion on “Humanitarian
challenges related to global food aid, including enhancing international
efforts and cooperation in this field,” chaired by
Council Vice-President Park In-kook (Republic of Korea) and moderated by John Holmes, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs.
July 2008: The Coastal Cities Summit, which will take
place from 17-20 November 2008, in Saint Petersburg, Florida, US, is organized
by the International Ocean Institute.
16 July 2008: The UN Economic and Social Council
(ECOSOC) continued its three-day Humanitarian Affairs Segment with a panel discussion
on “Disaster risk reduction and preparedness: addressing the humanitarian
consequences of natural disasters, including the impact of climate change.” The
discussion was chaired by Council Vice-President Park In-kook (Republic of
Korea) and moderated by Catherine Bragg, Assistant Secretary-General for
Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator. Park said the
current session would contribute to the debates of various fora that are
addressing disaster preparedness and risk reduction and the impacts of climate
change. In order to respond to the increased humanitarian needs caused by
climate change, Bragg called for adaptation mechanisms that draw
on existing risk-reduction measures and increased synergies between the climate
change and humanitarian agendas.

2008: In his inaugural speech to the second meeting of the
International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) Group on International
Aviation and Climate Change (GIACC), Roberto Kobeh González, President of the
ICAO Council, noted the work carried out by the Organization and the UNFCCC
Secretariat in coordinating their work plans, and highlighted the importance
for the Group to agree on aspirational goals on fuel efficiency.

July 2008: The Executive Board of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) will
hold its forty-first meeting from 30 July to 2 August 2008, at the UN Campus in
Bonn, Germany.

July 2008: The documentation from the workshop on aviation and carbon markets,
organized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) on 18-19 June
2008, at ICAO Headquarters, Montreal, Canada, have been released.

July 2008: The UN Economic and Social Council's (ECOSOC) Humanitarian Affairs
Segment opened on 15 July 2008, and organized its discussions around the theme
“Building capabilities and capacities at all levels for timely humanitarian
assistance, including disaster risk reduction.” Council Vice-President and Segment President Park
In-Kook (Republic of Korea) opened discussions by noting that this year's
Segment provided the international humanitarian community with an opportunity
to reflect on how to respond to the food crisis and the humanitarian
implications of disasters.
11 July 2008: In a speech delivered during the conference
The European
Union (EU) and its Overseas Entities: Strategies to Counter Climate Change and
Biodiversity Loss,” which was hosted on Reunion Island,
Mauritius, from 7-11 July 2008, under the auspices of the French Presidency of
the Council of the EU, Michel Jarraud,
Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), provided
an overview of the Organization's history and work in tackling climate change.
15 July 2008: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has posted
background documents and reports, as well as the provisional agenda, for its 52nd
General Conference Session, which will take place from 29 September to 4
October 2008, in Vienna, Austria.
14 July 2008: On the occasion of the
Technical Workshop on Protected Areas in the Amazon, which took place from 14-16 July 2008 in Amacayacú National Park,
Colombia, the
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Ahmed Djoghlaf, outlined the benefits of reducing emissions from
deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) initiatives.
