Event: OECD Conference on the Economics of Climate Change [viewed]

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) organizes this Conference to discuss how climate change mitigation and adaptation can best be tackled in an economically efficient manner, including by ensuring sufficient incentives for participation by all. Analytical input to the Conference will include work by OECD both on the Economics of Climate Change Mitigation and on the Economics of Adaptation. The aim of the work is to build understanding of the elements of what might be needed for an internationally feasible, inclusive and cost-effective post-2012 architecture to mitigate climate change.

Event: OECD Global Forum on Eco-Innovation [viewed]

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) organizes this Forum as an important part of the response to contemporary challenges, including climate change and energy security. The Forum will take stock of existing knowledge on policies to support eco-innovation (based on work done at the OECD and elsewhere), discuss policy challenges and contribute to the OECD Innovation Strategy.

Ozone Meeting Begins Discussion on HFC Phase-Down [viewed]

Discussions at OEWG 29 were dominated by consideration of a proposal submitted jointly by the Federated States of Micronesia and Mauritius (UNEP/OzL.Pro.WG.1/29/8) to amend the Montreal Protocol to include destruction of ozone depleting substance (ODS) banks and phase-down of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

CDM Executive Board Report Published [viewed]

© UNFCCC18 July 2009: The report of the 48th meeting of the Executive Board (EB) of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), which was held from 14-17 July 2009, in St. Georges, Grenada, is now available. Participants considered, inter alia: matters relating to the registration of CDM projects; accreditation of operational entities; and methodologies for baselines and monitoring plans.

IMO Circulates Interim Measures to Reduce GHG from International Shipping [viewed]

© IMO17 July 2009: The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) held its 59th session from 13-17 July 2009, in London, UK, and agreed to circulate interim voluntary measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping. The MEPC also issued a work plan of market-based instruments to offset growing emissions in other sectors and to serve as an incentive for the industry to invest in more fuel-efficient technologies.

Ozone Secretariat Convenes Two Climate Change-Related Workshops [viewed]

© The dais during the openening of OEWG-2916 July 2009: The Ozone Secretariat convened a workshop on the management and destruction of ozone-depleting substance (ODS) banks and the implications for climate change on 13 July 2009, followed by a workshop for a dialogue on high global warming potential alternatives to ODS on 14 July 2009. Both meetings were held in Geneva, Switzerland, in advance of the 29th meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG-29) to the Montreal Protocol, which is taking place from 15-18 July 2009.

UN Secretary-General Calls for the Non-Aligned Movement's Support to Move Toward a Greener Economy [viewed]

© NAM15 July 2009: In a speech to the High-Level Segment of the 15th Non-Aligned Movement Summit, which took place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, from 15-16 July 2009, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated that, just as when the Non-Aligned Movement was founded, the world today faces complex crises threatening development and security. He pointed to the severe economic and financial crisis, and the effort to “Seal the Deal” on climate change in Copenhagen later this year.
