30 September 2008: The 180th session of the Executive Board
of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) opened
today and will continue until 17 October in Paris, France. The agenda for the
Board's meeting includes the consideration for approval of a refined UNESCO
strategy for action on climate change.
September 2008: The report of the 12th meeting of the Joint
Implementation Supervisory Committee (JISC) is now available on the JI website.
September 2008: The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)
Executive Board has released the report of its 42nd meeting, which convened
from 24-26 September 2008, at the UN Campus in Bonn, Germany.
29 September 2008: The International Telecommunication Union
(ITU) has announced its Global Standards Symposium (GSS) will convene 20
October 2008, in Johannesburg, South Africa.
27 September 2008: The World Tourism Organization's (UNWTO)
World Tourism Day, which was organized around the theme “Tourism Responding to
the Challenge of Climate Change,” was hosted in Lima, Peru, and celebrated on
27 September 2008.
29 September 2008: Speaking at a Ministerial Meeting of
Least Developing Countries (LDCs), taking place in New York, US, UN Deputy
Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro underlined that climate change and the food
and oil crises add new pitfalls to achieving the 10-year Brussels Programme of
Action.
29 September 2008: Addressing the Ministerial Meeting on
Reducing Disaster risks in a Changing Climate, which took place in New York,
US, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged enhanced efforts to reduce the
fall-out from natural disasters, noting that climate change leads to harsher
weather extremes.
29 September 2008: During the ninth Indo-EU summit, which took place on 29 September 2008, in Marseille, France, India and the EU agreed to expand their cooperation in the field of nuclear energy and environmental protection. They also reviewed the 2006 Joint Action Plan and agreed to add
several new areas of cooperation, including in the field of exploitation of solar energy in India and civil nuclear research and development including in fusion energy.
24 September 2008: The first UN Private Sector Forum on the
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Food Sustainability convened on the
side of the opening of the UN General Assembly, to further business commitment
towards the MDGs and serve as platform to articulate business perspectives on
actions needed for their achievement.
26 September 2008: Speaking at the thirty-second meeting of
the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Group of 77 (G-77), Baldwin Spencer,
Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Antigua and Barbuda and Chair
of the G-77, welcomed the Group's continued efforts to strengthen its
solidarity and unity in advancing its development agenda. Referring to the
recent debates on climate change, he warned that the position of developed
countries with respect to development cooperation does not bode well, noting
that it will be “a tough battle.”
