Informal Ministerial Consultations Held in Preparation for COP14 [viewed]

Cop09 14 October 2008: More than 40 environment ministers and

high-level representatives held talks in Warsaw, Poland, from 13-14 October

2008, to prepare for the 14th Conference of the Parties (COP14) to the UNFCCC,

scheduled to take place in December 2008 in Poznań, Poland. During the informal

consultations, which were chaired by Maciej Nowicki, Minister of Environment of

Poland and future COP14 President, participants underscored that Poznań will be

a milestone for the new global climate agreement and agreed that the current

financial crisis should not hinder efforts to tackle climate change.

Governors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank took place on

13 October 2008, in Washington DC, US. Finance ministers from developing and

industrialized nations attended the event, which was preceded by a meeting of

the International Monetary and Financial Committee and the Development

Committee. Robert Zoellick, President of the World Bank Group, addressed the

meeting, noting the effects of the current financial crisis on energy and climate

11-13 October 2008, in Washington DC, US. Finance ministers from developing and

Committee. The IMFC and seminars during the week addressed the responses to the

current economic crisis, as well as the challenges posed by higher food and

fuel prices.

Major progress on air pollution, ship recycling and ballast water management at IMO environment meeting 13 October 2008: The International Maritime Organization's

(IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) held its 58th session from

6-10 October 2008, in London, UK. The Committee maintained momentum in limiting

or reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships, and made substantive

progress in developing technical and operational measures to address these

emissions.

UNU Hosts Environmental Refugee Conference [viewed]

UN premises at Langer Eugen Bonn 9 October 2008: The UN University (UNU) is hosting the

International Conference on Environment, Forced Migration and Social

Vulnerability, which is taking place in Bonn, Germany, from 9-11 October 2008.

The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), UN Environment Programme

(UNEP), and International Organization for Migration (IOM) are among the

Conference's organizing partners. Participants have been asked to capture the

current state of research and debate on the issue, and to conclude with

recommendations for moving forward.
