17 October 2008: The Asia Pacific Regional Forum on Promoting Wood-Based Bioenergy Using Wood Residues and Waste, which was held from 14-17 October 2008, in Jakarta, Indonesia, was organized by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO).
15 October 2008: The UN Fourth Committee (Special Political
and Decolonization) concluded its general debate on international cooperation
in the peaceful uses of outer space with a broad agreement on the value of
shared space technologies as a tool for sustainable development and disaster
management.
14 October 2008: The World Health Organization (WHO)
Regional Office for Europe, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and
the European Food Safety Authority held a seminar in Rome, Italy, in
conjunction with the celebration of World Food Day (16 October), to discuss
health implications of climate impacts on nutrition, food and water safety.
16 October 2008: The second symposium on “The Ocean in a
High CO2 World” convened from 6-9 October 2008, at the Oceanography Museum of
Monaco, sponsored by, inter alia, the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research,
the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Committee of the UN Educational, Scientific
and Cultural Organization (IOC-UNESCO), and the International Atomic Energy
Agency's (IAEA) Marine Environmental Laboratory.
14 October 2008: UN Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose
Migiro presented the Secretary-General's proposal for strengthening the
development pillar of the UN Secretariat to the Fifth Committee of the General
Assembly, which deals with administrative and budgetary matters, Underlining
the importance of concerted international action in addressing development
challenges, she stressed the intensifying effects of climate change, the food
and energy crises, and the global financial turmoil.
14 October 2008: During the debate on international
cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space by the Fourth Committee (Special
Political and Decolonization) of the 63rd General Assembly, Ciro Arévalo Yepes,
Chairman of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, underscored the
role space technology could play in addressing climate change, food security
and health.
9 October 2008: The Government of Canada, the UN
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Pacific
Islands News Association are supporting an initiative of the Secretariat of the
Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), to train 14 journalists from
throughout the Pacific region on environmental issues, including climate
change.
October 2008: The Ministry of Regional Municipalities and
Water Resources, Sultanate of Oman, and the Regional Centre on Urban Water
Management, Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran, in cooperation with the World
Meteorological Organization (WMO), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) and other partners, are organizing the International
Conference on Water Resources and Climate Change in the Middle East – North
Africa (MENA) Region, which will take place from 2-4 November 2008, Muscat,
Oman.
14 October 2008: More than 40 environment ministers and
high-level representatives held talks in Warsaw, Poland, from 13-14 October
2008, to prepare for the 14th Conference of the Parties (COP14) to the UNFCCC,
scheduled to take place in December 2008 in Poznań, Poland. During the informal
consultations, which were chaired by Maciej Nowicki, Minister of Environment of
Poland and future COP14 President, participants underscored that Poznań will be
a milestone for the new global climate agreement and agreed that the current
financial crisis should not hinder efforts to tackle climate change.
10 October 2008: The international Conference on “Competitive Cities and Climate Change,” organized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), took place from 9-10 October 2008, in Milan, Italy. The event provided the opportunity for mayors from some of the world's most important and influential cities to both address common challenges and share best practices on climate solutions.
