UNECE-FAO Workshop Highlights Green Building for Climate Change Mitigation [viewed]

© UNECE21 October 2009: A workshop on “Responding to climate change: wood's place in a global approach to green building,” was organized by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) during the Timber Committee Week, held from 12-16 October 2009. Among the workshop's conclusions was agreement that green building is a solution to climate change mitigation: energy-efficient construction for new buildings and renovation of existing buildings can reduce 40-50% of energy used for space and water heating.

CBD Executive Secretary Stresses Cities' Potential in Biodiversity Protection and Climate Change Mitigation [viewed]

© CBD20 October 2009: Addressing the World Green Roof Infrastructure Congress, held on 20 October 2009, in Toronto, Canada, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Ahmed Djoghlaf underscored the role of cities and local authorities for decisions relating to urban infrastructure, energy and transportation, all of which have a large impact both on climate change and biodiversity.

Event: Eighth Adaptation Fund Board Meeting [viewed]

The Adaptation Fund has been established by the parties to the Kyoto Protocol of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change to finance concrete adaptation projects and programmes in developing countries that are parties to the Kyoto Protocol. Agenda items for the eighth Board meeting will include: initial funding priorities of the Adaptation Fund Board; results based management framework for the Adaptation Fund; and financial issues.

Event: Intergovernmental Meeting for the High-Level Taskforce on the Global Framework for Climate Services [viewed]

Governing Body Selected for Forest Investment Program [viewed]

© The World Bank20 October 2009: The World Bank has announced the results of the regional self-selection process for member States in the governing body of the Forest Investment Program (FIP). Six developing countries (Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Morocco, Nepal and Romania) will join five contributor countries (Australia, Denmark, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States) on the FIP Trust Fund Sub-Committee, which is the governing body of the FIP. The Sub-Committee will hold its first meeting on 29 October 2009, in Washington, DC, US.

World Forestry Congress Addresses Forests and Energy [viewed]

The event consisted of three panels, addressing the current status and trends of technology for wood energy production and use, the social and environmental impacts of bioenergy production, and bioenergy policy and measures to plot a course for sustainable outcomes.

IPCC, FAO and IFAD Hold Expert Meeting on Data for LULUCF and Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Uses [viewed]

© IPCC20 October 2009: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) are sponsoring a meeting of experts at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, from 20-22 October 2009, to provide advice on how to use international datasets to develop greenhouse gas emission and removal estimates for land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) and agriculture, forestry and other land uses (AFOLU) sectors.
