2 December 2008: During the annual session of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), which took place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 19-21 November 2008, its Committee on Sustainable Energy welcomed the announcement of the award of three contracts for work on energy efficiency.
1 December 2008: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has convened economists, academics and leaders of private and public institutions at an “International Workshop to take forward the Global Initiative on the Green Economy.” The workshop, which is meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, is considering the US$4 million UN Green Economy Initiative, which was launched on 22 October 2008, and seeks to respond to the global economic downturn by focusing policymakers on the promise of economic growth and job creation in environmental industries.
1 December 2008: The UN Climate Change Conference opened in Poznan, Poland, on 1 December, bringing together around 11,000 participants from government, business and industry, environmental groups and research institutions.
1 December 2008: A capacity development workshop for the Pacific region on national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs), mainstreaming of biodiversity and the integration of climate change will be held from 2-6 February 2009, in Nadi, Fiji.
1 December 2008: The “Geothermal Energy Week,” which opened on 1 December 2008, is hosted by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Governments of Chile and Peru. The week will conclude on 5 December and include two main events: an international conference on the “Situation and perspectives for geothermal energy development in Latin America and the Caribbean,” to take place in Santiago, Chile; and a seminar on the potential for the development of geothermal energy in Peru, to be held in Lima, Peru.
29 November 2008: At the opening of the International Conference on Financing for Development to Review Implementation of the Monterrey Consensus, taking place in Doha, Qatar, from 29 November-2 December 2008, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for “bold and effective efforts” to ensure that “today's emergency does not become tomorrow's human crisis.”
28 November 2008: The first meeting of the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Biodiversity and Climate Change of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), including experts from 14 different countries, convened from 17-21 November 2008, in London, UK. The discussions focused on two main themes: the impacts of climate change on biodiversity; and biodiversity and climate change mitigation.
December 2008: The Joint Implementation (JI) Supervisory Committee will hold its 14th meeting from 17-18 February 2009, at the UN Campus in Bonn, Germany.
December 2008: The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Executive Board has published the report of its 44th meeting, which was held from 26-28 November 2008, at the Poznań International Fair Ltd, in Poznań, Poland.
December 2008: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is organizing the First Workshop for South American Region on the Implementation of Climate Watch Systems, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, from 8-11 December 2008.
