UN-HABITAT Business Forum Underscores Effects of Climate Change on Cities [viewed]

© UN-HABITAT9 July 2009: The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) organized the first Habitat Business Forum from 7-9 July 2009, in New Delhi, India, in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industries, the Indian Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, and the China Real Estate Chamber of Commerce. Under the theme innovative cities, the Forum brought together representatives from government, civil society and the private sector to discuss urban challenges, as well as sustainable and innovative solutions through public-private community partnerships.

Event: Forum on Forests and Climate Change – to Copenhagen and Beyond [viewed]

As part of the XIII World Forestry Congress, the global forest community is invited to this Forum for a debate aiming to produce a recommendation of a technical nature to the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC in Copenhagen in December 2009. Sessions and panel discussions will address land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF), reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD), and climate change impacts on forests and people.

Event: Forum on Forests and Energy – Balancing Risks and Opportunities [viewed]

As part of the XIII World Forestry Congress, the objectives of this Forum are to: assess and share the current state of knowledge about the risks and opportunities for forestry in future bioenergy markets; and assist forest policy makers to provide informed inputs into national and international policy discussions on bioenergy. Themes to be addressed include: bioenergy development and poverty alleviation; current status of markets and technologies for wood energy production; the environmental impact of bioenergy production systems; and bioenergy policies and measures for sustainable outcomes.

9 July 2009: The High-Level Segment of the 2009 substantive session of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), which met from 6-9 July 2009 in Geneva, Switzerland, concluded its consideration of current global and national trends and their impact on social development, including health, and adopted a Ministerial Declaration that highlights current and emerging challenges that are inter-twined with public health issues, including climate change.
