Event: UNITAR/WTI Course on Trade and Climate Change [viewed]

The course, organized by the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the World Trade Institute (WTI), aims to explore key legal and economic issues arising from the climate change debate, including the relationship between the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement and multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) that address climate change, particularly regarding the legality of domestic and international trade measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Oslo Meeting Reaches Agreement on Financing and Quick-Start Measures for REDD [viewed]

27 May 2010: Representatives of 50 countries met in Oslo, Norway, on 27 May 2010, to conclude an agreement on financing and a framework to rapidly operationalize measures for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD). Countries also pledged almost US$4 billion to quick-start implementation between 2010-2012.

Arctic Biodiversity Assessment Highlights Rapid Changes for Arctic Flora and Fauna [viewed]

27 May 2010: A new report synthesizing scientific findings on the status and trends for selected biodiversity in the Arctic indicates that unique Arctic habitats for flora and fauna, including sea ice, tundra, lakes and peatlands, have been disappearing over recent decades, and some characteristic Arctic species have shown a decline. Changes in Arctic biodiversity have global repercussions and are further creating challenges for people living in the Arctic.

UNDP Presents Climate Strategy at Second Lagos Climate Change Summit [viewed]

UNDPMay 2010: The second Lagos Climate Change Summit took place from 4-7 May 2010, in Lagos, Nigeria, under the theme “Transboundary effects of climate change: sharing best practices in mitigation and adaptation measures.” The Summit brought together about 1200 stakeholders who heard, inter alia, two presentations from the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

Fourth GEOSS Asia-Pacific Symposium Focuses on Climate and Biodiversity [viewed]

March 2010: The Fourth Asia-Pacific Symposium of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) was held in Bali, Indonesia, from 10-12 March 2010. Organized by the GEO Secretariat with the support of the Governments of Indonesia and Japan, the Symposium welcomed approximately 220 participants from 26 countries, and was organized around the theme "Towards a Global Earth Observation System of Systems that supports the societal benefit areas of climate and biodiversity."
