CTCN Advisory Board Discusses LDC Request Incubator, Budget and CTN Expansion [viewed]

ctcn10 October 2014: At its fourth meeting, the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) Advisory Board expressed its full support for a Least-Developed Country (LDC) request incubator programme to recognize the specific needs of LDCs and to assist them in taking full advantage of the CTCN's resources. Board members also discussed increasing collaboration between CTCN and financial institutions, determined that the Chairs and Vice-Chairs of the Technology Executive Committee (TEC) and CTCN will finalize the bodies' joint 2014 report, and heard a statement from the presidency of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC.

UNGA Discusses Work of the Organization [viewed]

CGE Conducts Workshops on UNFCCC Reporting for Developing Countries [viewed]

UNFCCC10 September 2014: As part of its work to build developing country reporting capacity under the UNFCCC, the Consultative Group of Experts on National Communications for Parties not included in Annex I to the Convention (CGE) organized two more regional workshops: one for the Eastern European and Asia-Pacific regions and one for the Latin American and Caribbean region. The trainings focused on using the biennial update report (BUR) guidelines available on the UNFCCC website.

Event: World Hydropower Congress 2015 [viewed]

Hosted by the International Hydropower Association (IHA), the 2015 World Hydropower Congress will take place in Beijing, China. The congress will focus on discussing and debating strategies for the hydropower sector over the next 35 years, and examining how sustainably developed hydropower can address climate change, and energy and water security. The congress is expected to attract 1,000 participants, including representatives of key organizations around the world involved in hydropower operation and development, as well as specialists from other areas, including politics, finance, the environment and technology.

Event: Workshop on Self-Consumption of Renewables: The Role of Storage in Revolutionising Grid Infrastructure [viewed]

This workshop, organized by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), will examine ways for battery storage technologies to transform grid infrastructure and support on-site renewable electricity generation by consumers. The event will also seek to identify best practices, regulatory challenges and lessons to be highlighted in a forthcoming IRENA technology roadmap for electricity storage. The workshop will have a maximum number of 30 participants, comprising policymakers, industry representatives and academics, among others, who will also receive complimentary access to the 'Energy Storage Summit' held on 6 November, in Tokyo, Japan. The event is part of a series of workshops, the first one of which, titled 'International Energy Storage Policy and Regulation,' was organized on 27 March in Düsseldorf, Germany. The third workshop in the series, on 'Supporting Small- and Large-scale Deployment of Renewables through Electricity Storage,' will take place on 3 December in New Delhi, India.

Event: Fifth African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGeo - C5) [viewed]

The 5th African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGeo - C5) is being organized to promote the development, exploration, use and financing of geothermal energy projects. ARGeo - C5, themed 'Geothermal: Solution to Africa Energy Needs,' will serve as an information-sharing platform and will facilitate regional cooperation. The main conference, which will take place 29-31 October, will feature a range of sessions geared toward exploring: risk mitigation; how to attract private developers; fast-tracking projects; stimulating the growth of the industry through investment; and the development, construction and operation of geothermal plants. Participants also have the option of participating in short courses, such as 'Improving Success in Drilling' and 'Financing Geothermal Projects' on 27-28 October. After the conference, an optional field trip on 1-2 November is offered. The African Rift Geothermal Development Facility (ARGeo) Project is organizing the conference in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Government of Tanzania. The UNEP-ARGeo Programme is a project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) that encourages the development of geothermal energy sources in East Africa to realize their untapped potential and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It was officially launched in 2010 at ARGeo - C3.

ITPGR High-Level Round Table Discusses Climate-Adapted Crops for Food Security [viewed]

ITPGRSeptember 2014: The fourth High-Level Ministerial Round Table on the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) convened under the topic 'The International Treaty, Climate Change and Food Security.' High-level representatives discussed the importance of climate-adapted crops in helping farmers face challenges confronting the global food system.

Event: Transport Day 2014 [viewed]

The Partnership on Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT) and the Bridging the Gap Initiative (BtG) are organizing Transport Day 2014 during the 20th session of the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP 20). The event is organized around the theme 'Transport Tackles Climate Change @ Transport Day 2014' and will feature a series break-out and plenary sessions aiming to raise the profile of the transport sector's climate change mitigation potential. Transport Day will aim to encourage the integration of transport into mitigation and adaptation policy making under the UNFCCC, ensure such and tools and resources as Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs), the Green Climate Fund (GCF), measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) systems, and technology transfer are appropriate for the transport sector.

Event: COP 20 Global Stakeholders Dialogues: Taking Action on Climate Change [viewed]

This three-day meeting, organized by the Presidency of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), will engage Peruvian stakeholder group leaders with representatives of the nine UNFCCC observer constituencies, and the Peruvian UNFCCC negotiations team. Taking place in plenaries open to the public and closed round table settings, the event will: offer information on the role and positions of the different UNFCCC observer constituencies and principal observer organizations; build ties at different levels; and allow for a direct contact between Peruvian constituency representatives and global peers for increased preparedness for COP 20.

UNFCCC Reports on REDD+ Information Hub Expert Meeting [viewed]

UNFCCC14 October 2014: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published the report of an expert meeting held to discuss the information hub to be created for activities related to REDD+ (FCCC/SBI/2014/INF.13). According to the report, meeting participants concluded that a significant degree of flexibility for adjustments should be built into the hub. The experts noted that parties may wish to revise the hub as experience tracking results is gained or to link it with other information systems that may be created under the UNFCCC.
