Agriculture, Family Farming Key for Sustainable Development, FAO Director-General Tells CARICOM [viewed]

FAO27 February 2015: Agriculture and small-scale and family farming are critical drivers of inclusive economic growth and sustainable development, and key to addressing food security and coping with climate change, Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Director-General José Graziano da Silva told Heads of Government at the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Summit. Da Silva also highlighted progress by CARICOM members in achieving the Millennium Development Goals' (MDG) hunger target.

Ceremony Concludes SIDS Year, Emphasizes Links with 2015 Processes [viewed]

IYSIDS-logo-sml24 February 2015: Speakers reflected on the International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) at a closing ceremony, noting the Year's efforts to raise awareness of SIDS' contributions to the global community, their resilience, their cultural heritage and the special challenges faced by SIDS in achieving sustainable development, including climate change and sea level rise, vulnerability to external shocks, and degradation of their biodiversity and marine resources. Many speakers discussed SIDS within the context of the post-2015 development agenda, the Third International Conference on Financing for Developing (FfD 3) and climate change negotiations.

ESCAP Conference Says Asia-Pacific Must Build Resilience to Ensure Development Gains [viewed]

UNISDR UNESCAP18 February 2015: As the world's most disaster prone region, the Asia-Pacific must build resilience to meet its development goals, according to participants at the Regional Conference on Integrating Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) into Development Planning and Financing. The Conference, hosted by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), brought together policymakers and experts one month ahead of the Third UN World Conference on DRR.

Governments of France, Philippines Launch Manila Call to Action on Climate Change [viewed]

Event: Seventh Africa Carbon Forum [viewed]

The Seventh Africa Carbon Forum (ACF) will focus on finance, development and investment opportunities related to climate change and of interest to project developers and policymakers. Participants will learn about international carbon market trends, opportunities under the Green Climate Fund (GCF), efforts to increase demand for Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) credits and results-based financing opportunities. The Government of Morocco will host a high-level ministerial segment, during which African countries will have the opportunity to discuss expectations and planned contributions to the anticipated 2015 climate change agreement. ACF is jointly organized by the UNFCCC Secretariat, UN Environment Programme (UNEP), UNEP-DTU Partnership, World Bank, African Development Bank (AfDB) and International Emissions Trading Association (IETA).

European Commission Launches Strategy for Energy Union with Climate Change Policy [viewed]

EU-SE4ALL25 February 2015: The European Commission has adopted a framework strategy that aims to create, for the European Union, a resilient ‘Energy Union' with a forward-looking climate change policy. An annexed action plan presents fifteen "action points" for the coming years, including electricity market legislation, enhanced regional cooperation, increased funding for energy efficiency and a new renewable energy package. Two related communications focus on improved electricity interconnection and a vision for a global climate change agreement in Paris in December 2015.
