CBD Selects Sponsored Experts for REDD Workshop [viewed]

Event: VI Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development in Asia and the Pacific (MCED6) [viewed]

This gathering of ministers of environment and of development is an agenda-setting forum to assess the state of sustainable development, identify regional perspectives and priorities, and decide concerted actions in response to imperatives posed by global and regional environment challenges. It is co-organized by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). The event is based on the recognition that the Asia and Pacific region continues to face persistent development challenges in terms of poverty alleviation, better access to basic services, sustainable use of natural resources and enhanced social inclusiveness. This situation is exacerbated by emerging risks and uncertainties including the food, energy and financial crisis as well as climate change threat. In addition, the region remains particularly susceptible to natural disasters, which are likely to increase in frequency and intensity as a result of climate change impacts.

Event: 26th OECD Ministerial Roundtable on Sustainable Development – Green Growth [viewed]

This roundtable of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) will bring ministers together with business and policy experts. Former political leaders will also be invited to explain what policy advice is needed to turn an idea like green growth into practical and politically realistic policy solutions.

Event: Japan-CARICOM Public Symposium on Climate Change and Biodiversity [viewed]

This public symposium is co-organized by the UN University (UNU), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). It will be held back-to-back with the second Japan-Caribbean Community (CARICOM) ministerial-level conference and will bring together the foreign ministers of the 15 CARICOM member countries. The ministers will be joined by Japanese academics and experts to discuss the threats from climate change faced by CARICOM countries, in particular those that are small island States. These include more frequent and intense hurricanes, subsequent flooding and erosion, and rising sea level. The symposium will also explore further cooperation between CARICOM and Japan.

Event: 2010 Social Forum on Climate Change and Human Rights [viewed]

The Office of the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights (OHCHR) will host the 2010 Social Forum on Climate Change and Human Rights, which will address: the adverse effects of climate change on the full enjoyment of human rights, including the right to life and economic, social and cultural rights; measures and actions to address the impact of climate change on the full enjoyment of human rights at the local, national, regional and international levels, including on most vulnerable groups, particularly women and children; and international assistance and cooperation in addressing the human rights related impact of climate change. The Forum is aimed to provide a dialogue avenue for NGOs to communicate with Human Rights Council (HRC) member States. The participants will include HRC member States, NGOs, UN agencies and academia representatives.
