8 February 2013: Arctic Environment Ministers met in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, from 5-6 February 2013, to address the rapid environmental changes in the Arctic. They discussed climate change and ocean acidification, contamination in the Arctic, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem based management.

The first Food Security Futures conference will bring together senior researchers from the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) to present their perspectives on research priorities for the 21st century. The conference is being held in Dublin, Ireland, the week before the EU Presidency (held the by Irish government) Meeting on ‘Hunger – Nutrition – Climate Justice: Making Connections for a More Sustainable World'. Topics will include: overarching food security issues and challenges for sustainable food security; nutrition dimensions of food security and challenges for sustainable food security; food security and sustainable resource use; and food security and climate change. A substantive research paper on research priorities will be presented for each topic, with comments by selected scientists, participants from the private sector and others. Attendees will address next steps to be taken by international organizations charged with addressing the research needs of a sustainable, food-secure future. More technical meetings in the 2-3 days leading up to the formal program will also be organized.

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), with a financial contribution from the Government of Japan, this workshop is being held back-to-back with the technical workshop organized by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on ecosystem-based approaches for adaptation to climate change under the Nairobi Work Programme on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change, held from 21-23 March 2013, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The workshop will support the update and/or implementation of National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAP) and the development of national climate change adaptation plans.

11 February 2013: During a preparatory meeting for the fourth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM4), which is to be held in April in Delhi, India, ministers from participating countries discussed progress on CEM's 13 clean energy initiatives, finalized the CEM4 agenda, and received a preview of the International Energy Agency's (IEA) "Clean Energy Progress Report."

The Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) will host discussions on priority issues, development and implementation of Global Environment Facility (GEF) projects, and project integration in national development frameworks. The event will bring together focal points from the GEF, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), with representatives from civil society, the GEF Secretariat, and the GEF Agencies. The event will include exercises on national capacity development (NCSA), results-based management, monitoring and evaluation, synergies in project design, as well as discussions on the GEF 2020 Strategy, the new GEF Fee Policy, and Project Cycle harmonization. The registration deadline for civil society participants is 17 February 2013.

7 February 2013: The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat has released the summary of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP) Special Event held in Doha, Qatar, on 1 December 2012, in conjunction with the second part of the first session of the ADP. The event, convened by the ADP Co-chairs Harald Dovland (Norway) and Jayant Moreshver (India), aimed to provide observer organizations with an opportunity to become involved in the ADP's work.

6 February 2013: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is collaborating with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to include participation of biodiversity experts in the upcoming regional training workshop on adaptation for Francophone Least Developed Countries (LDCs) of the Least Developed Countries Expert Group (LEG), established by the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC.
