ClimDev-Africa Highlights Commitment to Tackling Climate Change [viewed]

7 March 2013: Participants at the Fourth Session of the Steering Committee Meeting of the Climate for Development in Africa (ClimDev-Africa) Initiative reiterated their commitment to tackling climate change impacts in Africa, and recognized a need for the three lead partners, the African Union Commission (AUC), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UN ECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB), to work as one in implementing its 2013 work plan.

Event: Ecuador AFOLU Greenhouse Gas Inventory Meeting [viewed]

This meeting is organized by the Ministry of Environment of Ecuador, and will be facilitated by representatives of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the Coalition for Rainforest Nations (CfRN)/CD-REDD, the Mitigation of Climate Change in Agriculture (MICCA) Programme of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), and the UN-REDD Programme. The main objective of the meeting is to develop a joint effort to support capacity development on: implementing greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory in the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector; reporting under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC); and setting of institutional arrangement and facilitating communication among relevant stakeholders in Ecuador.

UNGA Session on Water and Disasters Stresses Need to Address Climate Change [viewed]

6 March 2013: Addressing the Special Thematic Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Water and Disasters, convened by the UN Secretary-General, the UN Secretary-General's Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB) and the High Level Expert Panel on Water and Disaster (HLEP/UNSGAB), UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underscored the need to reach a “global, legally binding climate change agreement by 2015.”

FCPF Reports on the Engagement of Indigenous Peoples [viewed]

14 February 2013: The Carbon Fund of the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) held a workshop with representatives of indigenous peoples and civil society in order to gather their views and opinions on the work of the FCPF. Topics discussed included REDD+ readiness and the development of a methodological framework for the FCPF.

GCOS Meeting Identifies Climate Observations Needs of Adaptation Activities [viewed]

6 March 2013: A GCOS meeting took place recently in Offenbach, Germany, gathering experts to determine the kinds of climate observations needed for implementing climate adaptation activities. The German Meteorological Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst, DWD) hosted the gathering, which was jointly organized by the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Event: FAO/NEPAD Workshop on Climate Change, Disasters and Crises in the Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector in Southern and Eastern Africa [viewed]

This regional workshop on climate change, disasters and crises in the fisheries and aquaculture sector in Southern and Eastern Africa is jointly organized by the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Fish Programme (NFFP), and the Smartfish Programme of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The objective of the workshop is to establish the current baseline with regard to the integration of climate change adaptation and disaster risk management in fisheries and aquaculture activities and policies in Southern and Eastern Africa, and, vice versa, determine the extent of integration of fisheries and aquaculture in climate change adaptation and disaster risk management strategies and plans. The overall aim is to coordinate activities and identify gaps and priority actions to be supported by the NFFP and other partners.

Event: Dublin Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Climate Justice [viewed]

The Irish Government and the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice will convene an international conference to open dialogue and debate on the global challenges of hunger, nutrition and climate justice, with the goal of encouraging and inspiring innovative thinking and solutions. The conference is being organized in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS). This will not be an intergovernmental meeting, but instead will bring together key policy makers and global thought leaders with local people and practitioners facing the realities of rising food prices, failed crops, under-nutrition and voicelessness. The objective will be to facilitate a respectful dialogue and learn from practical experience and robust evidence to inform a new approach to addressing hunger, nutrition and climate justice, in the context of the new international development agenda. The aim will not simply be to adopt an outcome document, but to inspire new ways of thinking about global development challenges and to invigorate and broaden the debate, at all levels, listening to and learning from the experiences of local people, and rooting future thematic policy approaches in their lives and their efforts to cope. To facilitate a focused dialogue, participation will be by invitation, but there will be opportunities for others to participate online.

Event: Inter-Ministerial and Experts Conference on Biosphere Reserves in the Caribbean Sub-Region [viewed]

Organized by the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis and the UN Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Man and the Biosphere Programme, this meeting will convene under the theme "Tools for Sustainable Development and Growth." The objective of the event is to facilitate discussions on the identification of appropriate locations for new biosphere reserves as well as their integration with local/national sustainable development and adaptation to climate change plans.
