Russian Federation, Gabon Submit INDCs [viewed]

flags_russia_gabon1 April 2015: The Governments of the Russian Federation and Gabon have submitted their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) to the UNFCCC Secretariat. With their submissions, a total of 35 parties have formally announced their INDCs. The Russian Federation's contribution brings the total emissions from industrialized countries covered by INDCs to nearly 80%. Gabon is the first African country to announce an INDC.

US Submits INDC [viewed]

USA Flag31 March 2015: The US has submitted its intended nationally determined contribution (INDC) to the UNFCCC Secretariat, formalizing its commitment to cut emissions by 26-28% below its 2005 levels by 2025. The contribution will represent an approximate doubling in the rate of its emissions cuts and is consistent with a straight line emission reduction pathway from 2020 to reductions of 80% or more below 2005 levels by 2050, according to the submission.

Renewable Energy Met 15% of EU Energy Demand in 2013 [viewed]

ec26 March 2015: Energy from renewable sources met 15% of gross energy consumption in the EU in 2013, according to the EU's statistical office, Eurostat. This figure compares with the 8.3% of energy consumption covered by renewables in 2004. Since then, renewables have grown in all EU countries, with 13 at least doubling their renewable share over the last ten years.

EC Launches Legal Action over Non-Transposition of Energy Efficiency Directive by Member States [viewed]

ec26 March 2015: The European Commission referred Hungary to the European Court of Justice for failing to transpose the EU's Energy Efficiency Directive into national law. In addition, the Commission launched procedures against all EU member States except Malta for failure to notify the Commission on the national transposition measures of the same directive.

UN Urges Improved Water Governance and Action on World Water Day [viewed]

un-water22 March 2015: On World Water Day, UN leaders and others called for urgent cooperation to ensure access to safe drinking water and sanitation. The 2015 World Water Development Report (WWDR), which the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) launched for the Day, recommends a dedicated Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on water, which the report says would contribute to poverty alleviation and improvements in the environment, health and food and energy production.

UNFCCC Circulates Draft Climate Agreement to Parties [viewed]

UNFCCC19 March 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has announced that the negotiating text for the anticipated 2015 climate change agreement has been translated into the six official UN languages and formally communicated to governments. The text was agreed as the basis for negotiations by the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP) at the eighth part of its second session in February 2015.

SE4ALL CEO Announces Departure [viewed]

Yumkella12 March 2015: The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Sustainable Energy for All and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiative has submitted his resignation to the members of the SE4ALL Advisory Board. Kandeh Yumkella, SE4ALL CEO since July 2013, stated in a letter to the Advisory Board that, while not an easy decision, he believes it is time to "go home to serve [his] people in Sierra Leone."
