World Bank President Highlights Role of Economic Transformation in Net Zero Emissions [viewed]

Worldbanklogo8 December 2014: In a speech to the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington DC, US, World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim called on countries to price carbon, eliminate fossil fuel subsidies, create conditions favoring renewable energy and invest in projects that can withstand extreme weather events. He said a 2015 agreement must send signals to investors and financial markets that could help transform economies toward achieving zero net emissions of harmful pollutants before 2100, in order to keep temperature below 2°C. According to Kim, economic policy will be key to achieving this goal.

Peruvian Environment Ministry and ICRAF Sign MoU [viewed]

World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF)7 December 2014: The Peruvian Environment Ministry, represented by Minister Manuel Pulgar-Vida, and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), represented by Director-General Anthony Simons, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for inter-institutional cooperation. The MoU: builds on existing collaboration between the two institutions on themes such as land-use planning for low-carbon development, and climate change adaptation and mitigation; and is expected to spur an intensification of work in such areas as the detection and rehabilitation of degraded land.

LAC Countries Launch Land Restoration Project [viewed]

limacop207 December 2014: Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries and regional programmes, in partnership with regional and global organizations, have launched ‘Initiative 20x20,' a country-led effort to begin restoring 20 million hectares of degraded land by 2020. The initiative, which aims to restore forests and ecosystems, reduce poverty and improve agricultural productivity, was launched on the sidelines of the UN Climate Change Conference in Lima, Peru.
