COP 21 President Reflects on Paris Agreement, Key Steps for 2016 [viewed]

Laurent_Fabius11 February 2016: Describing the outcome of the tedious, multi-year negotiation process leading to the adoption of the Paris Agreement as "the most balanced, comprehensive and ambitious result that we could hope to achieve," Laurent Fabius, President of the 21st session of the Conference of the Paris (COP 21) to the UNFCCC, emphasized that "our collective focus must move to implementation." For their efforts toward this outcome, Fabius and UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres are the 2016 awardees of the Ewald von Kleist Award.

January 2016 Sustainable Energy Finance Update [viewed]

High-Level UN Climate Change Appointments Announced [viewed]

UNFCCC29 January 2016: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced the appointment of Janos Pasztor, former Assistant Secretary-General on Climate Change, as Senior Adviser to the Secretary-General on Climate Change. In addition, Laurent Fabius, President of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC, appointed Laurence Tubiana, French Ambassador for Climate Change, to fill one of the two co-champion positions established by the COP decision accompanying the Paris Agreement (FCCC/CP/2015/L.9/Rev.1).

UNEP, IDB Cooperate to Support SDGs and Paris Agreement [viewed]

unep_idb20 January 2016: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) have announced that they will cooperate on environmental conservation in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change. The IDB is set to increase its financial support to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to more than US$150 billion over the coming years.

IGOs, Development Banks and UN Agencies React to Paris Agreement [viewed]

paris_agreementDecember 2015: Upon adoption of the Paris Agreement by the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC in Paris, France, a broad array of stakeholders, including UN agencies, development banks and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), responded to the outcome reached by the 196 UNFCCC Parties. The Agreement, which will be opened for signature in April 2016, aims to strengthen the global response to climate change, hold the increase in global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C.

As 2016 Begins, UN Calls for Delivering on SDGs [viewed]

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)January 2016: The world officially commenced implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development on 1 January 2016, with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) succeeding the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which expired on 31 December 2015. On the occasion, the UN highlighted the importance of partnerships and international solidarity in implementing the 2030 Agenda, and called for sharing experiences and tracking progress, including through an Annual SDG Progress Report.

UN Expert Group Urges Inclusion of People of African Descent in Climate Process [viewed]

OHCHR29 December 2015: People of African descent will be among those most adversely affected by climate change, notes the UN Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent, in a statement calling for international climate change efforts to be more inclusive. The Working Group requests that the needs and views of those most at risk be taken into account at future climate talks.
