National Leaders, Governments Send Mix of Signals on Paris Agreement Implementation [viewed]

Paris Agreement Implementation18 July 2016: As focus turns towards national implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change, The Elders released a statement calling on governments to act in accordance with the Agreement's vision. The 'Elders Statement on Climate Change' was released in the context of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), which met from 11-20 July 2016, in New York, US, to review national action towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A number of recent news items on national climate action have implications for both the Paris Agreement and SDG 13 (Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts).

GCOS Implementation Plan 2016 to Open for Public Review [viewed]

GCOS WCRP logosJuly 2016: The Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) Programme's Implementation Plan will be open for public review from 25 July to 5 September 2016. The 2016 Plan, which is being prepared in consultation with the global climate scientific and observing community, will be presented to the Steering Committee for final endorsement and submitted to the UNFCCC Secretariat on 10 October 2016. The GCOS Implementation Plan 2016 will then be submitted to the 45th session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 45) under the UNFCCC in Marrakech, Morocco, in November 2016.

In FY16, World Bank Provides Over US$61 Billion [viewed]

world_bank_new12 July 2016: The World Bank Group's (World Bank) commitments rose to over US$61 billion in loans, grants, equity investments and guarantees to countries and private businesses in fiscal year 2016 (FY16), according to a World Bank press release. This financing includes support for climate change and a continued focus on sub-Saharan Africa, which remains a top priority with commitments to countries reaching US$12.5 billion in FY16.

Mitigation Update: Solar and Wind Prices Plummet as Temperatures and Sea Levels Rise [viewed]

mitigation_update22 June 2016: The first five months of 2016 have served as a reminder of the urgency of mitigating climate change as each month, January-May, has set global temperature records, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). On 17 June, the WMO announced May's record, saying combined average temperature over land and ocean surfaces was 0.87°C above the 20th century average of 14.8°C. May is the 13th consecutive month to set a global temperature high.

Norway Ratifies Paris Agreement, Promises to Go Carbon Neutral by 2030 [viewed]

norway-flag20 June 2016: The Government of Norway deposited its instrument of ratification of the Paris Agreement on climate change with the UN, making it the 18th Party to the UNFCCC to do so. Its ratification comes on the heels of the country's pledge to become carbon neutral in 14 years. On 14 June, the Norwegian Parliament voted to reduce and offset carbon emissions so that its emissions are net zero by 2030, two decades earlier than the country's previous pledge.
