China, US and Cook Islands Join Paris Agreement [viewed]

cook_us_china3 September 2016: The Cook Islands (on 1 September), and China and the US (on 3 September) have deposited their legal instruments for joining the Paris Agreement with the UN. With these three countries, a total of 26 Parties to the UNFCCC have deposited their instruments of ratification, acceptance, approval or accession to the Agreement, representing 39.06% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Adaptation and Loss and Damage Update: COP 22 Preparations Pick Up Speed; Regions Enhance DRM Cooperation [viewed]

unisdrs_unfccc_pifs1 September 2016: With the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the UNFCCC to be held in Marrakesh, Morocco, from 7-18 November 2016, less than three months away, preparations are underway. The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a number of meeting documents, and Parties have been submitting their views on a range of issues, including the Nairobi Work Programme (NWP) on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change. The outcomes of several upcoming September meetings will also feed into the Marrakesh Climate Change Conference.

Bahamas Ratifies Paris Agreement [viewed]

bahamas22 August 2016: The Government of the Bahamas deposited its instrument of ratification of the Paris Agreement with the UN on 22 August. This latest ratification brings the total number of Parties to the UNFCCC that have deposited their instruments of ratification, acceptance or approval to the Agreement to 23. In total, these countries represent 1.08% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Adaptation and Loss and Damage Update: Heat-Related Deaths to Increase, Children and the Poor Most Climate Vulnerable [viewed]

adaptation and loss update8 August 2016: As reports of new temperature extremes exceeding the 50°C mark continue to come in, further climate change-related concerns have been voiced by the UN community. The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) has expressed concern over a potential rise in deaths precipitated by heat. The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Bank have cautioned that children and the world's poor are among those disproportionately affected by climate change. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and others have emphasized climate change impacts on food security. On the policy side, the Adaptation Committee (AC) and the Least Developed Countries (LDC) Expert Group (LEG) have issued a call for submissions from Parties and stakeholders on their Paris mandates.

The 'State of the Climate in 2015' report published in the Bulletin of the AMS notes the combined effect of long-term global warming and a very strong El Niño effect, and reports record-high sea levels, upper ocean heat content, global sea surface temperatures, global surface temperatures, and major greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations.

Peru, Cameroon, Democratic People's Republic of Korea Ratify Paris Agreement [viewed]

peru_cameroon_korea 3 August 2016: The Governments of Peru, Cameroon and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea have deposited their instruments of ratification of the Paris Agreement with the UN on 25 July, 29 July and 2 August, respectively. With these three ratifications, a total of 22 Parties to the UNFCCC have ratified the Agreement, representing 1.08% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
