Canada and US Amend Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement [viewed]

7 September 2012: Lisa Jackson, Administrator, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Peter Kent, Minister of Environment, Canada, have signed an amendment to the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, originally signed in 1972. The amendments strengthen US and Canadian cooperative action to address water quality threats and prevent harm.

EU Greenhouse Gas Emissions Fall by 2.5% in 2011 [viewed]

EEA7 September 2012: European Environment Agency (EEA) estimates show that EU greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions declined by 2.5% in 2011, in part due to a mild winter, which lowered heating demands, as well as to increased consumption of renewable energy.

UNESCO Reports on New Model for Estimating Coastline Erosion from Sea Level Rise [viewed]

UNESCO10 September 2012: The Institute for Water Education of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO-IHE) has highlighted recent findings that coastline erosion resulting from rising sea levels is much greater than previously estimated. Researchers from UNESCO-IHE, the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and the Deltares Institute found that the previously used model, known as the Bruun effect, did not consider erosion in inlet areas, such as river mouths and estuaries.

CDM Issues One Billionth Certified Emission Reduction Credit [viewed]

7 September 2012: The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) has issued the one billionth certified emission reduction (CER), the UNFCCC Secretariat has announced. The one billionth CER was issued to a fuel switch project in India, involving a manufacturing plant that switched its fuel source from coal and oil to locally-gathered biomass.

Adaptation Fund3 September 2012: The Adaptation Fund Board (AFB) has decided to recommend that the Global Environment Facility (GEF) should remain as the interim secretariat for the Adaptation Fund Board. The intersessional decisions of the Adaptation Fund Board are based on a Performance Review of the Secretariat and Trustee of the AFB.

FAO, IFAD and WFP Call for Action to Avert Global Food Crisis [viewed]

4 September 2012: In response to increases in maize, wheat and soybean prices similar in magnitude to those seen during the 2007-2008 world food crisis, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Executive Director of the UN World Food Programme (WFP) have issued a joint statement calling for urgent action to avert global price shocks.

Australia, EU to Link Emissions Trading Systems [viewed]

28 August 2012: Greg Combet, Australian Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, and Connie Hedegaard, EU Commissioner for Climate Action, have announced that the Australian emissions trade scheme and the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) will be fully linked by 2018.
