IDB Supports Renewable Energy Matrix in Peru [viewed]

IDB supports creation of new sustainable energy matrix in Peru

28 January 2009: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will provide financial and technical support to the Government of Peru to support an integrated approach to developing conventional and renewable energy sources in order to contribute to climate change mitigation. A new energy matrix is the centerpiece of a package of measures Peru has agreed to carry out under a US$150 million programmatic policy-based loan approved by the IDB Board of Executive Directors on 28 January 2009.

UNEP Reports on the US Administration's Appointment of Climate Envoy [viewed]

27 January 2009: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has reported on the Obama Administration's appointment of Todd Stern as Special Envoy on climate change. In this position, the former senior White House negotiator in the Kyoto and Buenos Aires climate talks will be the chief climate negotiator in UN and other climate sessions.

26 January 2009: In an address to UK Parliamentarians, Yvo de Boer, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, underlined that the need for urgent action on climate change has become “abundantly clear” and that a political solution to the world's most pressing problem is critical for humanity's further development as a whole, and especially for the world's poorest and most vulnerable. Recognizing that the Poznan climate conference of December 2008 had not been marked by any major political outcomes, he noted that it made progress in a number of specific areas of work, including the adoption of the Poznan Strategic Programme on Technology Transfer and the operationalization of the Adaptation Fund, and fully endorsed an intensified negotiating schedule for 2009.

23 January 2009: In his statement at the assumption of the chairmanship of the Group of 77 (G77) for 2009, Altigani Salih Fidail, Sudan's Minister of International Cooperation, said the Group will tackle multiple and inter-related crises in 2009, including climate change, drought, desertification and the loss of biological diversity, and stressed that the lack of implementation of internationally agreed goals remains the “Achilles heel of the UN development agenda.”
