Mother Earth is Under Pressure - UN Secretary-General [viewed]

22 April 2010:  In a message to mark International Mother Earth Day, celebrated on 22 April, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated that "Mother Earth – our only home – is under pressure."  Noting that we have "drawn on nature's capital without putting back," he underlined that we are now seeing the consequences, as showcased by climate change and the depleted ozone layer.

UNFCCC Executive Secretary Addresses Public Climate Change Hearing [viewed]

14 April 10: At a public hearing on Climate Change in Brussels, Belgium, held on 14 April 2010, Yvo de Boer, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, stated that the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference constituted an important event because it: raised the profile of climate change policy to the highest political level; significantly advanced the negotiations on the infrastructure needed for well-functioning, global climate change cooperation, including improvements to the Kyoto Protocol Clean Development Mechanism (CDM); and produced the Copenhagen Accord, "a clear letter of political intent to constrain carbon and respond to climate change, both in the short and in the long term."

World Bank President: Green Growth Can Pull Millions Out of Poverty [viewed]

14 April 2009: Robert Zoellick, President of the World Bank Group, gave a lecture on "The End of the Third World? Modernizing Multilateralism for a Multipolar World," at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars, in Washington DC, US. He noted that climate change policy can be linked to development and win support from developing countries for low carbon growth, "but not if it is imposed as a straitjacket."
