29 September 2008: The Executive Board of the Clean
Development Mechanism (CDM) has launched a call for public comments on the
draft document “Elaboration of CDM Accreditation Requirements,” from 29
September 2008 to 27 October 2008.
26 September 2008: Leading industrialized nations met at the
World Bank, and pledged more than US$6.1 billion to the recently created World
Bank Climate Investment Funds (CIF).
29 September 2008: Nicholas Haysom, Director for Political
Affairs in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General, and Robert Orr, one
of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's top aides, highlighted during a news
conference that the role of the UN and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in global
crises is increasingly recognized.
22 September 2008: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon held the
first-ever meeting with over 20 global advertising companies to drive support
for a comprehensive UN communications initiative to help combat climate change.
21 September 2008: On the occasion of the 16th Clean Up the
World Weekend, which was celebrated from 19-21 September 2008 under the theme
“Start today-Save tomorrow-Clean Up Our Climate,” Google and Clean Up the World
launched a website that allows groups to share information about themselves and
the activities they undertook as part of the Clean Up the World Weekend.
September 2008: The 2008 International Day for Disaster
Reduction, celebrated on 8 October, will focus on making hospitals and health
facilities safe from disaster. The Day will be part of the UN International
Strategy for Disaster Reduction's (UN/ISDR) new World Disaster Reduction
Campaign 2008-2009: Hospitals Safe from Disasters.
18 September 2008: The UN Secretary-General has appointed
Festus Mogae, former President of Botswana, and Srgjan Kerim, outgoing
President of the UN General Assembly, as Special Envoys on climate change.
17 September 2008: In an interview with Carbon Finance,
UNFCCC Executive Secretary Yvo de Boer said a sectoral approach to reducing
emissions would have a “clear environmental benefit.”
September 2008: The Tenth Global Meeting of the Regional
Seas Conventions and Action Plans will take place in Guayaquil, Ecuador, from
25-27 November 2008.
16 September 2008: Angel Gurría, Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), participated in the Energy Leaders Summit organized by the Financial Times and World Energy Council, in London, UK, on 16-17 September 2008. Addressing heads of the main traditional and new energy companies, as well as government representatives and financiers, who met to discuss the future of energy beyond 2025, Gurría highlighted the need for public-private partnerships for the development and deployment of “large-scale transformative energy technologies.”
