        • DescriptionThis meeting is the inaugural meeting of the Congress on Water, Climate and Energy, and participants will explore the topics of resilient and sustainable cities with a focus on climate change adaptation and mitigation. The meeting will further examine how to incorporate climate change adaptation and uncertainty into the city vision and infrastructure, and will include solutions such as the role of regulation, technologies and smart networks. The meeting is organized by the International Water Association in partnership with the UN World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP), the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), and ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability.

        UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies May 2012 Bonn (Nordrhein-Westfalen), Germany
        • DescriptionThe primary sponsors of this symposium are: the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea; the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); and the North Pacific Marine Science Organization. Participants will address the role of climate change on the oceans, including: sea level rise; changes in thermo-haline ocean circulation; acidification; oligotrophy of temperate seas; changes in species abundance; distribution and phenology; and biodiversity loss. The symposium aims to bring together experts from different disciplines to exchange observations, results, models and ideas at a global scale and to discuss the opportunities to mitigate climate change and protect the marine environment and its living resources.

        Second International Symposium: Effects of Climate Change on the World's Oceans Yeosu, Korea, Republic of
        • DescriptionWorld Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is intended to raise awareness of the potential for the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide. The 17th of May marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union. The theme of this year's WTISD is "Women and Girls in ICT".

        World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2012 worldwide
        • DescriptionThe US will host the 38th Summit of the Group of Eight (G8) at Camp David, Maryland, in May 2012. The G8 comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Russian Federation, the UK, and the US. The meeting was originally scheduled to take place in Chicago, back-to-back with the NATO summit, but the US announced the change in location and dates on 5 March (http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/03/05/statement-press-secretary-g-8-and-nato-summits). The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will hold its summit in Chicago from 20-21 May (see http://www.chicagonato.org/ for more information). The Presidents Benin, Ghana and Tanzania and Prime Minister of Ethiopia are expected to join in the discussions on food security in Africa.

        • DescriptionThe Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO)'s Committee on Agriculture (COAG) will consider technical work relating to: options for stakeholder dialogue in support of sustainable livestock developments; sustainable crop production intensification; perspectives of land and water resources in a changing climate; and improving statistics for food security, sustainable agriculture and rural development.

        23rd Meeting of the FAO Committee on Agriculture Rome (Lazio), Italy
        • DescriptionThese two events will be held simultaneously under the unified theme "The Green Economy: Challenges and Opportunities in Managing Health, Water, Waste, Land, Energy, Climate Change and our Natural Resources" to emphasize technologies, actions and strategies to address key environmental and health issues facing Caribbean small island developing States (SIDS). The CEF series on Caribbean health and environment has been organized by the Caribbean Community's (CARICOM) Caribbean Environmental Health Institute (CEHI) biennially since 2000. The annual ReCaribe has been organized since 1995 by Clean Islands International (CII) to discuss waste management issues in the wider Caribbean region. The combined event is being co-sponsored by the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Caribbean Regional Coordinating Unit (CAR/RCU), the Global Environment Facility's (GEF) Integrating Watershed and Coastal Area Management project (IWCAM), and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

        Sixth Caribbean Environment Forum and Exhibition (CEF 5) and 16th Annual Wider Caribbean Waste Management Conference (ReCaribe) Saint Kitts and Nevis
        • DescriptionThe purpose of this first meeting of the Joint Implementation (JI) Designated Focal Points (DFP) Forum is to provide a platform for representatives of DFPs and national focal points (NFPs), as well as other stakeholders, to: discuss, enhance and harmonize the implementation of JI; coordinate their liaison with the JI Supervisory Committee (JISC); and to provide capacity building and experience sharing exercises. During this first meeting, the DFP Forum will hold open sessions to interact with project developers, accredited independent entities and NGOs. The deadline for stakeholder registration is 11 May 2012.
