The Climate Change Policy & Practice Team
The Climate Change Policy & Practice team of the International Institute for Sustainable Development’s Reporting Services (IISD RS) brings you news and information on the activities of the UN and international organizations in responding to the problem of global climate change. The team of highly-qualified experts regularly updates the Climate Change Policy & Practice website (http://climate-l.iisd.org/) and produces the Climate Change Daily Feed, which contains the latest stories posted to Climate Change Policy & Practice, along with guest articles written by the Heads of UN and other intergovernmental bodies, and IISD RS Climate Policy Updates.
Langston James "Kimo" Goree VI
Director, IISD Reporting Services (US)
Langston James “Kimo” Goree VI is the Director of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) Reporting Services and one of the founders of the Earth Negotiations Bulletin. Kimo established the CLIMATE-L list in 1998 has been the list’s moderator for more than ten years. In January 2008 he developed the first concept note for Climate Change Policy & Practice, and is responsible for the fundraising and overall coordination for this knowledge management project.
Chris Spence
Deputy Director, IISD Reporting Services / Thematic Expert for Climate Science, Climate Change Policy & Practice (New Zealand)
Chris Spence is the Deputy Director of IISD Reporting Services and is responsible for the recruitment, training and day-to-day management of consultants and staff. He also writes periodic Policy Updates for Climate Change Policy & Practice, and frequently manages IISD’s teams of experts at major UN conferences on climate change and other environment and development issues. He currently divides his time between San Francisco and New York.
Prior to joining IISD, Chris worked in New Zealand as a political researcher and speechwriter, investigative journalist and lobbyist. His work focused on environment, health and international relations. He has also consulted widely for various United Nations agencies and organizations over the past decade, most notably on climate change. He lectures and writes regularly on climate change in the U.S. and internationally. His first major book, Global Warming: Personal Solutions for a Healthy Planet, was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2005. He has an MA (Hons) in International Relations from the University of Victoria, New Zealand. Chris is also an advisor to IUCN’s Multilateral Office in Washington, DC.
Lynn Wagner, Ph.D.
Manager, Knowledge Management Projects, and Thematic Expert on Desertification and Sustainable Development, Climate Change Policy & Practice / IISD RS (US)
Lynn Wagner is the executive editor of Climate Change Policy & Practice and the Thematic Expert for Sustainable Development and Desertification. She has covered meetings of the Commission on Sustainable Development for the Earth Negotiations Bulletin since 1994, and has covered meetings of the Convention to Combat Desertification since 1996. Lynn is also the editor of MEA Bulletin and Linkages Update. She received her Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies, and has authored a book and several journal articles exploring the influence of negotiation processes on negotiated outcomes.
Alice Bisiaux, LL.M
Content Editor and Thematic Expert on Oceans, Coasts, and Freshwater, Climate Change Policy & Practice / IISD RS (Spain)
Alice Bisiaux is the Content Editor and Thematic Expert for Oceans, Coasts, and Freshwater of Climate Change Policy & Practice. She has covered various global conferences on oceans and water policy since 2003. She teaches climate change negotiations at ESADE University in Barcelona, Spain. She received her LL.M. in international legal studies from New York University and is a member of the New York bar, as well as a qualified solicitor in England. She is responsible for the Water, Oceans and Coasts section of IISD’s two publications MEA Bulletin and Linkages Update.
Diego Noguera
Digital Manager and Online Editor, Climate Change Policy & Practice / IISD RS (Colombia)
Diego Noguera is the Digital Manager for IISD Reporting Services and Online Editor of Climate Change Policy & Practice. He is a good example of the new generation of online jobs, working mostly from Bogotá, Colombia, while solving the technical and digital problems of staff and consultants in New York, Geneva, Winnipeg, and two dozen other cities worldwide. Diego has covered meetings for the Earth Negotiations Bulletin since 2003 and is the Digital Editor of MEA Bulletin and Linkages Update. Diego has a degree in Computer Science and a postgraduate degree in Networking and E-business.
Angeles Estrada Vigil
Online Editor, Climate Change Policy & Practice / IISD RS (Argentina)
Ángeles Estrada is the Online Editor of Climate Change Policy & Practice. She has covered meetings for the Earth Negotiations Bulletin since 2005. She is Argentinian, but as a daughter of a diplomat was born in Austria and spent her childhood in Brazil, Argentina, Chile and China. She has a degree in Industrial Design from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she also teaches Design. Her work focuses on ecodesign, and her studio ‘MinimahUella’ designs products that minimize environmental impact by analyzing their life-cycle and using recycled materials.
Brad Vincelette
Web Software Developer, Climate Change Policy & Practice, IISD RS (Canada)
Brad has been architecting web software from the very start of his career (10+ yrs) using several different languages and frameworks. He specializes in data-driven web programming specifically in the development of “smarter” search engines, web/data performance tuning, process automation, and search engine/content optimization. In his spare time and when requested, Brad has been doing presentations for small business startups on variety of computer topics covering areas on: how to properly manage your computer desktop/files/data, how to effectively purchase hardware and software, how to troubleshoot your computer, internet searching techniques, and what you really need to know when starting up a web site.
Soledad Aguilar, LL.M
Thematic Expert on Trade and Investment, Climate Change Policy & Practice / IISD RS (Argentina)
Soledad Aguilar is the Thematic Expert on Trade, Finance and Investment for Sustainable Development. She has participated in more than fifty multilateral environmental negotiations, mostly on finance and trade and environment issues within the climate change, biodiversity, biosafety and chemicals conventions, working for the Earth Negotiations Bulletin as writer and team leader, and previously as a negotiator and diplomat for the Argentine Government. She has also worked as a consultant on international environmental law for the World Bank and the Food and Agriculture Organization on issues including a post-2012 climate change framework, pest and pesticide management, and biofuels. She is a regular contributor to specialized environmental policy and law journals on developments in the Doha environmental goods and services negotiations, the UN Financing for Development process, and the GEF. Soledad holds an LLM degree from the London School of Economics and law degree from University of Buenos Aires.
Tomilola Akanle
Thematic Expert on Capacity Building and Education, and Industry/Industrial Development, Climate Change Policy & Practice / IISD RS (Nigeria)
Tomilola “Tomi” Akanle is the Thematic Expert for Capacity Building & Education and Industrial Development, and she also covers the actions taken by the UNU, UNIDO, UNITAR, UNICEF, UNESCO, ITU and the UNFCCC Sustainable Development Mechanisms programme. She joined the Earth Negotiations Bulletin team in 2007 and covers meetings on climate change and sustainable energy. She is currently studying for her PhD in International Environmental Law at the University of Dundee, Scotland, and is studying the clean development mechanism (CDM).
Asheline Appleton, LL.M
Thematic Expert on Adaptation, Mitigation, Biodiversity, and Forests, Climate Change Policy & Practice / IISD RS (Kenya)
Asheline holds an LL.M. degree from University College London and a law degree from the University of Nairobi. She has specialized in international environmental law, particularly climate change and biodiversity. Asheline worked as a State Counsel for the Attorney-General in the department of treaties and agreements, Kenya, as well as in private practice. She now consults for a number of international organizations and UN agencies on environmental issues.
Melanie Ashton
Thematic Expert on Chemicals Management, Climate Change Policy & Practice / IISD RS (Australia)
Melanie Ashton is the Thematic Expert for Chemicals Management. She holds an MSc in Environment and Development from the London School of Economics. Her dissertation analyzed the relationship between International Financial Institutions and developing country Governments in a Principal-Agent framework. Originally from Melbourne, she also holds a Bachelor of Science in Earth Sciences from the University of Melbourne. Melanie first attended international environmental negotiations as a member of the WSSD Youth Caucus and later as a consultant in the area of Persistent Organic Pollutants. She has worked extensively on chemical management and environmental issues throughout the South Pacific.
Joanna Dafoe
Thematic Expert for Transportation, Climate Change Policy & Practice / IISD RS (Canada)
Joanna received her BA in Peace and Conflict studies and Environmental Policy from the University of Toronto, where she focused her research on the role of non-state actors in the UNFCCC process. She has contributed her research on civil society influence to the Yale/UNITAR conference on Environmental Governance and Democracy and was a member of the Canadian Government Delegation to the 16th and 17th United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development as an NGO delegate. Joanna was the 2011 Pimlott Lecturer at the University of Toronto and continues to showcase creative perspectives on climate policy through her correspondence on CIUT 89.5 The Green Majority. Joanna is pleased to be joining the ENB reporting and IISD Knowledge Management Projects team.
Leonie Gordon
Thematic Expert on Biodiversity - Conservation and Sustainable Use, Climate Change Policy & Practice / IISD RS (UK)
Having joined IISD Reporting Services as a writer/editor in 2005, Leonie now works as "Your Meeting Bulletin" (YMB) manager/editor, responsible for IISD RS' "for hire" reporting services. Leonie holds a BA Honours in law from Durham University and a Masters in Anthropology of Development from the University of Sussex. She began her career as an international lawyer in London and Brussels, then worked in documentary film production and with non-governmental organizations in wildlife conservation. Since joining the ENB team, she has followed a diverse number of processes but has focused on negotiations on international trade in endangered species, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
Reem Hajjar
Thematic Expert on Forests, Climate Change Policy & Practice / IISD RS (Lebanon/Canada)
Reem Hajjar is the Thematic Expert for Forests. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Forest Resources Management at the University of British Columbia, where she is examining community forestry experiences in Brazil, Mexico and Canada. She has a Master's in Conservation Biology from Columbia University, and a Bachelor's in Biology from McGill. Since joining the Earth Negotiations Bulletin in 2005, she has covered various forest and biodiversity-related negotiations, including the meetings of the UN Forum on Forests and the International Tropical Timber Organization.

Stefan Jungcurt, Ph.D.
Thematic Expert on Biodiversity, Climate Change Policy & Practice / IISD RS (Germany)
Stefan Jungcurt has worked for IISD as project officer on the negotiations on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD) and as associate working in the areas of sustainable agriculture, genetic resources for food and agriculture, and linkages between international regulation on biodiversity conservation and other issue areas such as trade and climate change. He completed his Ph.D. on institutional interplay in global environmental governance at Humboldt University, Berlin in 2007. Originally from Germany, Stefan is currently based in Gatineau, Québec, where he spends his free time exploring the great Canadian outdoors.
Tallash Kantai
Thematic Expert for International Energy Organizations, Climate Change Policy & Practice / IISD RS (Kenya/Tanzania)
Tallash studied International Relations and minored in Environmental Studies at undergraduate level at the United States International University. She is currently seeking to better understand the concept of sustainable development from both the political angle and at the practical level, and hopes to do her Masters in Environmental Policy. When not the “hybrid” team member for IISD RS, she can be found mentoring teenage girls, practising photography, reading, or working with women’s groups in and around Nairobi.
Faye Leone

Faye recently joined IISD RS after four years at the World Federalist Movement - Institute for Global Policy, where she ran the UNelections Campaign and ReformtheUN.org. Faye has a Masters in International Affairs with a concentration in trade and sustainable development. Her experience includes community organizing in Boston, refugee advocacy in Washington, DC, human rights fact-finding and conflict transformation with Burmese communities in Thailand, and international institutions and governance in New York.
Aaron Leopold
Thematic Expert For Energy and Transport, Climate Change Policy & Practice / IISD RS (Germany)
Aaron is currently working towards a Ph.D. at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig, Germany. His work is a macrocomparative exploration of the differing interfaces between science and politics in the context of biofuels policy formation in Brazil, the EU and the USA. Aaron holds a masters degree in Global Political Economy from the University of Kassel where he also worked as a research associate and economics instructor before beginning his doctorate. He is active in Attac Germany's agricultural policy and Economic Partnership Agreements working groups.
Stefan Renckens
Thematic Expert on Energy Organizations and Institutions, Climate Change Policy & Practice / IISD RS (Belgium)
Stefan is pursuing a Ph.D. in environmental politics at Yale University. His research deals with the interaction between public and private environmental regulation, focusing on several issue areas such as biofuels, fisheries, electronic waste, fair trade, and organics. He holds an MA in Political Science (2002), a Complementary Degree in Economics (2003), and an MA in Peace and Conflict Studies (2005), all from the University of Leuven (Belgium). Between 2003 and 2008 he worked as a researcher and teaching assistant at the Political Science department of the University of Leuven.
Tanya Rosen
Thematic Expert on Biodiversity and Sustainable Development, Climate Change Policy & Practice / IISD RS (Italy/Yugoslavia/US)
Since joining the IISD RS team, Tanya she has followed negotiations on trade in endangered species, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. Tanya alsoworks with the Wildlife Conservation Society in Montana and Central Asia. She began her career as a practicing international lawyer in Italy and the United States. Her interest in large carnivores led her to go back to school and study bears and work on human-wildlife conflicts in Yellowstone and Italy, and most recently in Pakistan with Project Snow Leopard. Tanya has worked as adviser for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, and holds degrees in law and social ecology from Italy, Harvard and Yale. She is managing editor of the IBA/BSG International Bear News and vice-chair of the IUCN WCPA Transboundary Conservation Specialist Group.

Renata Rubian is the Thematic Expert for Human Development issues. She works for the Poverty Group, Bureau for Development and Policy, at UNDP, an initiative that supports the implementation and achievement of MDGs by 2015. Prior to moving to New York, Renata served at the UNDP Regional Centre in Sri Lanka, where she collaborated on the development of the Asia Pacific Regional Human Development Report series. Renata’s previous experience also includes working with the Ecosystem and Livelihoods Group at IUCN, UNEP, Convention on Biological Diversity, UNDP in Brazil, and the Canadian Government in Ottawa. She holds an MA in Political Science, with a major in Development Studies, from McGill University.
