21 December 2011: The Court of Justice of the EU (ECJ) has ruled that the EU decision to include the aviation sector in its Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) from 2012, thereby providing that all airlines – including those of third countries – will have to acquire and surrender emission allowances for their flights departing from and arriving at European airports, is lawful under international law.
21 December 2011: Three new smart grid standards on narrowband powerline communications (NB-PLC) have been defined and approved by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) at the recent meeting of the ITU-T Study Group 15 on optical transport networks and access network infrastructures, held from 5-16 December 2011 in Geneva, Switzerland.
21 December 2011: The Pacific Island Forum Secretariat (PIFS) has released the 2011 Pacific Plan Annual Progress Report and Reporting Annex. The report, available in English and French, provides an update of work undertaken over the last 12 months to implement the Pacific Plan, and highlights work underway by Forum members including on climate change, trade integration, fisheries and better coordination of aid.
20 December 2011: The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is promoting green energy in Serbia with a €45 million sovereign-guaranteed loan to Elektroprivreda Srbije, the state-owned power company, to renovate existing and build new, small hydropower plants.
20 December 2011: FOREST EUROPE and the Forestry and Timber Section of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have launched a web-based resource tool based on their joint State of Europe's Forests 2011 report that also contains new unpublished data on forests, forest management and forest industry in the pan-European region.
20 December 2011: The UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) has announced the launch of China’s Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) Phase-out Management Plan (HPMP) under the Montreal Protocol. The US$270 million HPMP aims cut consumption of HCFCs in China by January 2015.
20 December 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced that UN/ISDR Champion for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation in Asia Pacific and Philippines Senator Loren Legarda has called on Philippines President Benigno Aquino to launch a National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Plan (NDRRMP).
19 December 2011: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published the report (FCCC/ARR/2011/ISL) of the individual review of the annual submission of Iceland submitted in 2011, according to which, in 2009, carbon dioxide accounted for 76.5% of total GHG emissions in Iceland.
16 December 2011: The World Bank has reported that the Government of Germany has added €30 million, for a total of €84 million, to its financial commitments to the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF).
