Event: EnergyPact-UNCTAD Special Session: The Global South Agenda for a Sustainable World [viewed]
Co-organized by the EnergyPact Foundation and the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), this special session will address the role of of the Global South and the South-South Cooperation in meeting challenges of Climate Change and Sustainable Development. The meeting will examine the way in which the challenges of climate change can be met in a sustainable manner by focusing on developing countries and particularly, on the dynamics of South-South cooperation.
26 October 2011: The UN-REDD Programme's October newsletter reviews recent activities related to its work on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks (REDD+).
24 October 2011: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published the annual report of the Joint Implementation Supervisory Committee (JISC) to the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (COP/MOP) (FCCC/KP/CMP/2011/4).
20 October 2011: The International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group, will launch a US$60 million financial mechanism to support alternative business models for climate change mitigation in developing countries, providing companies with strategies and tools to provide products and services aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
October 2011: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) published a brief, authored by María Elena Gutierrez and Xavier Mommens, which highlights the potential for microfinance to support climate change adaptation, as well as the risks that climate change imposes on microfinance schemes.
21 October 2011: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) has reported that the first payments for the index-based livestock insurance programme piloted in Kenya's Marsabit District have been provided to 650 insured herders.
21 October 2011: During the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 10), which took place in Gyeongnam Province, Republic of Korea, the UNCCD Secretariat partnered with the provincial government and SK Telecom to loan 1000 Android-based Samsung Galaxy Tablet personal computers to conference participants. The tablets permitted easy access to official documents and the daily journal along with a variety of other material.
