26 September 2011: The European Commission has published the benchmark values that will be used to allocate greenhouse gas (GHG) emission allowances free of charge to more than 900 aircraft operators with a view to making the aviation sector part of the EU's emissions trading system (EU ETS) from 2012.
23 September 2011: Irina Bokova, Director-General of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), held a meeting with Amb. Dessima Williams, Permanent Representative of Grenada to the UN and Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), and Omar Ramirez, Executive Vice-President of the Office of Climate Change and Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Dominican Republic, to discuss UNESCO activities of relevance for small island developing States (SIDS) in the areas of climate change, oceans, education and awareness raising.
23 September 2011: The World Bank has published a report, titled "Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in Developing Countries: A Perspective on Barriers to Deployment," which assesses some of the most important barriers facing CCS deployment and assesses the economic and environmental impacts of potential CCS deployment in the power sector in the Balkan and Southern African regions, using a techno-economic model.
22 September 2011: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have joined with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) on the occasion of the launch of the World Disasters Report 2011, which addresses the problem of hunger and malnutrition, highlighting the impacts of climate change on agricultural production.
20 September 2011: The second round of negotiations between the EU and Switzerland on linking their carbon emissions trading systems was held on 20 September 2011, in Zurich, Switzerland. The negotiations seek to develop an agreement under which Switzerland and the EU would recognize each other’s carbon emissions allowances.
28 September 2011: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published five submissions from India and one from the Philippines, which will be issued as conference room papers (CRP) to be considered by the third part of the 14th session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 14), which will take place in Panama City, Panama, from 1-7 October 2011.
24 September 2011: The World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) met in Washington DC, US, for the Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors and issued a Development Committee Communiqué noting that the turbulence in global financial markets, volatile commodity prices and pressures on food security pose critical challenges to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
24 September 2011: Small Island Developing States (SIDS) have stressed that sustainable development is not possible while climate change threatens to swamp SIDS, and they have called on the UN to assist SIDS in combating the effects of climate change.
