30 May 2011: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released estimates showing that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from world energy generation reached record levels in 2010, and that 80% of projected 2020 emissions from the power sector are already locked in, in the form of existing power plants or those under construction.
28 May 2011: President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso, and Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan reaffirmed the close partnership between the EU and Japan and discussed climate change, green growth and energy at the 20th EU-Japan Summit.
27 May 2011: The 10th Session of the UN Permanent Forum for Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), which convened at UN Headquarters in New York, US, from 16-27 May 2011, focused on reviewing progress made on issues ranging from economic and social development to the environment, and whether indigenous peoples have given free, prior and informed consent to decisions affecting their communities, and human rights issues.
27 May 2011: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) hosted a training of trainers on gender mainstreaming in projects and programmes on adaptation and climate change in Suva, Fiji, from 16-18 May 2011. The training was organized by the Energy Programme of SPC's Economic Development Division (EDD) and attended by 13 participants, including representatives from community-based organizations.
27 May 2011: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published a report titled “Climate and Electricity Annual 2011 - Data and Analyses,” which contains a collection of analyses considering global and regional trends in electricity supply and demand in relation to the decarbonization challenge posed by climate change.
27 May 2011: The World Bank approved a US$640 million loan to build a pumped storage system in Indonesia's Upper Cisokan Pumped Storage Hydropower project, to allow the power plant to supply electricity in peak season.
27 May 2011: The Leaders of the G8 met in Deauville, France, from 26-27 May 2011, to discuss, inter alia, green growth, climate change and biodiversity. The Summit concluded with the adoption of the G8 Declaration titled "Renewed Commitment for Freedom and Democracy."
27 May 2011: Among the documents that the UNFCCC Secretariat has published in the run up to the 34th sessions of the subsidiary bodies, which will take place place from 6-16 June 2011 in Bonn, Germany, are documents on the status of contributions, the status of submission and review of fifth national communications, and the third workshop under the work programme of SBSTA to revise the UNFCCC Annex I reporting guidelines.
26 May 2011: The 40th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council, together with the tenth meeting of the Council of the Least Developed Country Fund (LDCF) and Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF), has approved an integrated land-use programme to fund investments to address priorities set by 12 African countries in West Africa and the Sahel.
26 May 2011: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published the report (FCCC/AWGLCA/2011/INF.2) by the Chair of the expert workshop on the Technology Mechanism, held in conjunction with the 14th session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 14).
